Biography
In only his second full season on the circuit, Dale Earnhardt Jr. erased any doubt about his qualifications to not only be a bona fide driver, but also proved he is championship-caliber material. With three wins and two runner-up finishes (including finishing second to teammate Michael Waltrip in the ill-fated Daytona 500), Earnhardt continued to show the mettle and racing roots from which he comes from.
In 2001, Earnhardt Jr. won the Pepsi 400 at Daytona in July and the EA Sports 500 at Talladega in October. While accusations flew that the Pepsi 400 was "fixed" for Earnhardt to win in some twisted way of closure over his father's death at Daytona five months earlier, Earnhardt silenced his critics by coming back to win another superspeedway race at Talladega in October in convincing fashion. He is generally seen as a strong title contender for 2002.
As though Earnhardt Jr. didn't have enough hype and expectations entering the NASCAR Winston Cup Series, he had to go and prove everybody right in 2000.
Earnhardt Jr. had quite a rookie season. He won a pair of NASCAR Winston Cup Series events -- at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth and Richmond (Va.) International Raceway -- not to mention The Winston all-star race at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Charlotte.
He followed up his 1998 championship campaign in the NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division with a '99 run that was just as strong. "Little E" totaled 13 wins in two-plus seasons in NASCAR's junior circuit. Earnhardt ran five NASCAR Winston Cup Series races in 1999.
Earnhardt Jr., a resident of Mooresville, N.C., began his driving career at the age of 17, competing in the street stock division at Concord (N.C.) Speedway. Within two seasons, Earnhardt had joined the NASCAR Late Model Stock Division. He picked up his first NASCAR Busch Series victory at Texas.
A third generation NASCAR driver, Earnhardt Jr. would like nothing more than to follow in the tire marks of his grandfather, Ralph Earnhardt, and his father, Dale Earnhardt.
