Scotts' statement: Edwards' sponsor concerned about on-track incident: Scotts appreciates the support of NASCAR fans everywhere, and we have an excellent relationship with Carl Edwards, Jack Roush and the No. 99 Roush Fenway Racing team. However, like many fans, we were very concerned about the on-track incident that occurred in Atlanta this past weekend. As a result, we have strongly expressed these concerns to both Carl and Jack, and we are confident that they have a clear understanding of the trust we have placed in them as ambassadors of our company, our associates and our brands. In addition, as a sponsor, we want to make sure that drivers, race teams and NASCAR focus on keeping these types of incidents and misjudgments from happening. (PR)

Carl Edwards placed on 3-week probation following incident: Carl Edwards has been placed on three weeks' probation by NASCAR for intentionally wrecking Brad Keselowski's car during last weekend's race at Atlanta. NASCAR president Mike Helton said Tuesday there are two separate issues: the wreck itself, and the fact that Keselowski's car went airborne. He says NASCAR is reviewing why the car left the track, and adds that NASCAR will meet with both drivers and their car owners to "clean the slate."(AP)

Carl Edwards defends on-track antics on his Facebook page: On Sunday and having met with NASCAR officials at the track after being parked, Carl Edwards later wrote on his Facebook page explaining the reasoning behind his on-track antics at Atlanta. “My options,” he wrote. “Considering that Brad wrecks me with no regard for anyone’s safety or hard work, should I: A) Keep letting him wreck me? B) Confront him after the race? C) Wait till Bristol and collect other cars? or D) Take care of it now? “I want to be clear that I was surprised at his flight and very relieved when he walked away. Every person has to decide what code they want to live by and hopefully this explains mine.” (Autosport.com)

Pemberton: NASCAR unlikely to suspend Carl Edwards: NASCAR’s first take on the latest round in the long-lingering Brad Keselowski-Carl Edwards feud? And feud apparently isn’t too strong a term here, considering the carnage involved. Robin Pemberton, NASCAR’s competition director, said it will take a few days to ponder just what is going on here. “It looked like it could have been a payback,” Pemberton said of Edward’s final clip. “We talked with Carl after the race, and we have an understanding about it, and we will talk internally again as a group Monday or Tuesday this week, and make any decision if there will be any other actions we will take.” What options are at hand? Suspension, perhaps, though that has rarely been used at the Cup level, particularly when a major star like Edwards is at stake. “I’m not going to speculate at this time,” Pemberton replied. NASCAR to announce any additional penalties against Edwards on Tuesday: Brad Keselowski called for fellow Sprint Cup driver Carl Edwards to be suspended for at least one race after Edwards wrecked him Sunday in the Kobalt Tools 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. But Robin Pemberton, vice president of competition for NASCAR, said the governing body would take its time in examining all the facts before deciding what to do with Edwards, whose No. 99 Roush Fenway Ford was ordered to the garage after wrecking the No. 12 of Keselowski and sending it airborne on the frontstretch on Lap 323 of what was a scheduled 325-lap event. Pemberton and other NASCAR officials, including president Mike Helton, met with Edwards following Sunday's race -- but Pemberton said they would discuss the incident further "internally" on Monday and Tuesday before announcing any additional penalties for Edwards by late Tuesday afternoon. "It looked like it could have been a payback from the No. 99 on the No. 12," Pemberton said. The two drivers got together earlier during Sunday's race when they bumped on Lap 41 and Edwards ended up getting shoved into the No. 20 Toyota of Joey Logano, effectively ruining both of their days. Keselowski, meanwhile, drove away from that incident and went on to put together a solid run for the day while Edwards spent much of the afternoon having his car repaired in the garage. Edwards returned to the track on Lap 190 after spending 150 laps in the garage, and appeared to purposely wreck Keselowski when Keselowski appeared headed for a top-five finish. "To come back and intentionally wreck someone, that's not cool," Keselowski said. "You could have killed someone in the grandstands. I know that it's a little ironic that it's me saying that, but at least I didn't do it intentionally [when it happened at Talladega]. It will be interesting to see how NASCAR reacts to it. They have the ball. If they're going to allow people to intentionally wreck each other at tracks this fast, we will hurt someone either in the cars or in the grandstands. It's not cool to wreck someone at 195 mph." Pemberton indicated that Edwards more or less admitted in the post-race meeting with NASCAR officials that he intended to wreck Keselowski, but that he did not mean to send him airborne. Keselowski's car ended up landing upside down, nearly crushing in the driver's side of the roof, and was completely destroyed in the aftermath. Keselowski was shaken up after the wreck and needed assistance getting removed from the car, but eventually was cleared at the AMS infield care center. "Carl said he got into him; he said he didn't expect the result," Pemberton said. Earlier, Edwards spoke briefly with the media and attempted to explain his thinking. "Brad knows the deal between him and I," Edwards said. "The scary part was his car went airborne, which was not at all what I expected. At the end of the day, we're out here to race and people have to have respect for one another and I have a lot of respect for people's safety. I wish it wouldn't have gone like it did, but I'm glad he's OK and we'll just go on and race some more and maybe him and I won't get in any more incidents together. That would be the best thing." Keselowski told reporters that he believed Edwards took "three swipes" at him before connecting, and that Edwards deserves to be suspended for at least one race. He also defended what had occurred during their first incident Sunday. "He cut down on me on a restart and I lifted; I couldn't lift fast enough for him," Keselowski said. "I lifted for him to let him in, but I was there. I don't know what more you can do. "[Keep the] car low, that's what they say. So I was underneath him, tried to cut him a break. It was too late, though; he turned down. I apologized to him, but there was nothing that I could do in that situation."(NASCAR.com)

Carl Edwards: NASCAR needs to take downforce away: Carl Edwards, driver of the No. 99 Aflac Ford: “I think whatever [NASCAR] can do to take downforce away is great for the sport, great for the racing and good for the fans. Atlanta is one of the last tracks where you can really manhandle a car, drive and slide the car sideways. Taking downforce away will make more tracks like that, which is good.” (AMS PR)

Carl Edwards: Danica Patrick will help Nationwide series: Roush Fenway Racing driver Carl Edwards said Danica Patrick’s presence will bring attention to the Nationwide Series. “For her to be successful over here will be a huge benefit to not only her and her sponsors but our whole sport,” Edwards said. “So I hope she does well - not any better than me - but I hope she does really well. “But I think it’s going to be tough, just like it is for everyone.” (Scene Daily)

Aflac/Pixar car and commercial to debut at Darlington: Aflac Inc. has collaborated with Disney Pixar for a new television commercial set to debut Saturday. The Aflac duck will share the screen with a few characters from Disney Pixar’s 3-D movie “Up,” an animated comedy adventure that hits theaters later this month. The ad’s message is the same one Aflac has been pushing in its last several commercials: the company will provide policyholders with cash when they are injured or sick. Company officials have previously said that while many people are familiar with Aflac, not all know what the supplemental insurance firm actually does. “This commercial reminds all of us about the importance of having a financial plan for life’s unexpected events,” Jeff Charney, Aflac senior vice president and chief marketing officer, said in a news release.Aflac will also use characters from “Up” in a new paint scheme for the Aflac 99 Ford Fusion race car. The Disney Pixar-inspired car will make its debut Saturday when Carl Edwards takes the wheel at the Southern 500 Nascar race at Darlington Raceway in South Carolina. (Ledger-Enquirer)

"It was really a good talk, and I think that we're all on the same page and that we want to do whatever we can to make these races as safe as they can be for everybody - the fans and the drivers and all that," Edwards said Friday at Richmond Inernational Raceway. Edwards spends time in NYC: Carl Edwards spent about 15 quality minutes racing remote controlled cars with Beth Stern, radio host Howard Stern's model wife, who interviewed Edwards for the TV show "Extra." "It's really kind of fun," Edwards said after racing Stern. "We try to get all of this stuff out of the way. That's good." This stuff, for Edwards, was some media appearances and filming a commercial for sponsor Claritin's Clear to Drive campaign in New York, before flying his own jet to Bristol, Tenn., for Sunday's race. (NY Daily News)

Aflac unlikely to sell remaining sponsorships on No. 99: Aflac will likely be the primary sponsor of Roush Fenway Racing’s No. 99 Ford driven by Carl Edwards for more NASCAR Sprint Cup races this year than originally announced. When Aflac announced it would become the primary sponsor in 2009, a company official had indicated that it hoped to keep only 20-25 races as the primary sponsor and sell off the remaining 11-16. That was back in May when the contract, reportedly a three-year deal with Roush Fenway worth $26 million a year, was inked. The economy has changed since then, as has Edwards’ stature as he challenged for last year’s Sprint Cup title and won a series-high nine races. Aflac currently has sold off four races – three to Subway and one to Claritin – and a company executive says it won’t sell off additional races unless the potential sponsor fits with Aflac’s business model. “Our strategy is right now we feel like we have the hottest driver in NASCAR,” Keith Farley, Aflac’s corporate sponsorship manager, said last week at Daytona. “We feel like since originally working with him last May and working on the contract, his value has gone up. Our strategy is to make sure we do what’s right for the Aflac brand and for Carl. (SceneDaily.com)

Aflac puts Edwards on short leash: Aflac loves Carl Edwards and is paying big money to pair him with its iconic duck in commercials and on the hood of his car, but the company would like to not see its driver pictured scuffling with other drivers in the NASCAR Sprint Cup garage area. Aflac Vice President Al Johnson, speaking at the Street & Smith’s Motorsports Marketing Forum on Tuesday, talked about the line drivers have with their sponsors in showing their emotions. “Obviously, we’re very protective of our brand,” said Johnson, who oversees all advertising for the company. “We certainly don’t want garage scuffles going on or things to happen … whether it’s a celebrity that’s in one of our commercials on down to a sports star. “But we do want people to be true to themselves.” (SceneDaily.com)

Johnson and Edwards sponsor exposure exceeded $1 billion in '08: Joyce Julius & Associates monitors sports sponsorships, but it is best known for measuring exposure given to sponsors during televised sports coverage. In NASCAR, for instance, Joyce Julius looks at telecasts of races in NASCAR's three top series and clocks how long a sponsor's logo can be seen clearly. It counts each second and then multiplies that by what it would cost to buy a second of advertising on that telecast. According to this year's research, Jimmie Johnson's sponsors had their respective logos shown for 59hours, 28minutes, 39seconds. By the Joyce Julius formula, that means Johnson's sponsors got $510,161,750 worth of exposure. Carl Edwards, who finished second in the standings to Johnson, had his sponsors shown for 58:50:11. That equates to $495,908,515 in exposure. (More at Charlotte Observer)
