Aflac/Pixar car and commercial to debut at Darlington: Aflac Inc. has collaborated with Disney Pixar for a new television commercial set to debut Saturday. The Aflac duck will share the screen with a few characters from Disney Pixar’s 3-D movie “Up,” an animated comedy adventure that hits theaters later this month. The ad’s message is the same one Aflac has been pushing in its last several commercials: the company will provide policyholders with cash when they are injured or sick. Company officials have previously said that while many people are familiar with Aflac, not all know what the supplemental insurance firm actually does. “This commercial reminds all of us about the importance of having a financial plan for life’s unexpected events,” Jeff Charney, Aflac senior vice president and chief marketing officer, said in a news release.Aflac will also use characters from “Up” in a new paint scheme for the Aflac 99 Ford Fusion race car. The Disney Pixar-inspired car will make its debut Saturday when Carl Edwards takes the wheel at the Southern 500 Nascar race at Darlington Raceway in South Carolina. (Ledger-Enquirer)

Aflac unlikely to sell remaining sponsorships on No. 99: Aflac will likely be the primary sponsor of Roush Fenway Racing’s No. 99 Ford driven by Carl Edwards for more NASCAR Sprint Cup races this year than originally announced. When Aflac announced it would become the primary sponsor in 2009, a company official had indicated that it hoped to keep only 20-25 races as the primary sponsor and sell off the remaining 11-16. That was back in May when the contract, reportedly a three-year deal with Roush Fenway worth $26 million a year, was inked. The economy has changed since then, as has Edwards’ stature as he challenged for last year’s Sprint Cup title and won a series-high nine races. Aflac currently has sold off four races – three to Subway and one to Claritin – and a company executive says it won’t sell off additional races unless the potential sponsor fits with Aflac’s business model.
“Our strategy is right now we feel like we have the hottest driver in NASCAR,” Keith Farley, Aflac’s corporate sponsorship manager, said last week at Daytona. “We feel like since originally working with him last May and working on the contract, his value has gone up. Our strategy is to make sure we do what’s right for the Aflac brand and for Carl. (SceneDaily.com)

Aflac Vice President Al Johnson, speaking at the Street & Smith’s Motorsports Marketing Forum on Tuesday, talked about the line drivers have with their sponsors in showing their emotions. “Obviously, we’re very protective of our brand,” said Johnson, who oversees all advertising for the company. “We certainly don’t want garage scuffles going on or things to happen … whether it’s a celebrity that’s in one of our commercials on down to a sports star. “But we do want people to be true to themselves.” (SceneDaily.com)

Johnson and Edwards sponsor exposure exceeded $1 billion in '08: Joyce Julius & Associates monitors sports sponsorships, but it is best known for measuring exposure given to sponsors during televised sports coverage. In NASCAR, for instance, Joyce Julius looks at telecasts of races in NASCAR's three top series and clocks how long a sponsor's logo can be seen clearly. It counts each second and then multiplies that by what it would cost to buy a second of advertising on that telecast. According to this year's research, Jimmie Johnson's sponsors had their respective logos shown for 59hours, 28minutes, 39seconds. By the Joyce Julius formula, that means Johnson's sponsors got $510,161,750 worth of exposure. Carl Edwards, who finished second in the standings to Johnson, had his sponsors shown for 58:50:11. That equates to $495,908,515 in exposure. (More at Charlotte Observer)
