Pat Tryson named WYPALL Crew Chief of the Race at Texas: Pat Tryson, crew chief for the No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge driven by Kurt Busch, has been named the WYPALL Wipers Crew Chief of the Race following Sunday's Dickies 500 at Texas Motor Speedway. Tryson's pit and fuel strategy, along with solid coaching to Busch on the radio, enabled the No. 2 team to capture its second win of the season. The final 121 laps of the race were caution free, and Tryson was already in fuel mileage strategy mode. He called Busch to the pits under caution on lap 207 and instructed his driver to start conserving fuel. As the next round of fuel stops began to take place, Kurt's brother Kyle was in the lead and came in for four tires and fuel on lap 269. Tryson wanted to stretch it a couple more laps in hopes of making it the rest of the way without another stop. After his stop on lap 271, Kurt was in fifth, and by lap 320 of the 334-lap showdown, he was second to his brother. "Don't worry about Kyle (Busch)," Tryson said to his driver on the team radio when there were 13 laps remaining. "He's three laps short, we're about a lap short and if you can save us some fuel, we'll win this thing." Sure enough, Tryson's prediction was right on as the No. 18 car ran out of fuel with just 3 laps to go, allowing his brother to cruise his way across the finish line in victory. "It came down to the crew chief, Pat (Tryson) putting in the right calls and getting us the fuel mileage to bring it home," said Busch. "We had good solid pit stops and good pit strategy, a very solid team." "Pat's carefully planned strategy worked to their advantage," said Jeff Hammond, WYPALL Wipers spokesperson and SPEED/FOX television analyst. "He put the No. 2 car on fire, keeping him up in the front of the pack all day long." This is the second time this season that Tryson has been named the WYPALL* Wipers Crew Chief of the Race. It's now down to Chad Knaus and Darian Grubb, who are tied for the lead as the WYPALL* Wipers Crew Chief the Race, with four wins and both are in contention to become the WYPALL* Wipers Crew Chief of the Year. The winner will be determined following the race in Phoenix this weekend. (WYPALL PR)

Kurt Busch wins at Texas; Johnson wrecks early: Jimmie Johnson's drive to history took a hard hit against a wall and Kyle Busch ran out of gas trying to complete an unprecedented NASCAR trifecta. Kurt Busch drove to Victory Lane at Texas after his younger brother ran out of fuel with 2½ laps left Sunday, finishing 129 laps ahead of the rebuilt car driven by Johnson, who saw his points lead slashed from 184 to 73 over Hendrick teammate Mark Martin with two races left. Kurt Busch and No. 2 Miller Lite team to show support for Special Operation Homefront: Kurt Busch continues racing to support fundraising efforts for Operation Homefront this weekend at Texas. Miller Lite is donating $200,000 to the organization dedicated to serving our military families in need. This amount will grow by an additional $10,000 if Kurt and the No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge can achieve another top-10 finish in this weekend's race at Texas. He already scored one such bonus when he finished 10th in the Oct. 17 NASCAR Banking 500 at Lowe's Motor Speedway. Kurt is also asking for fans to help in this worthy cause. You can do so in several manners. To make a $5 donation, just text the word T-R-O-O-P-S to 90999. The charge will appear on your wireless bill. Alternatively, visit millerlite.com/vets to make a donation and learn more about the great work of Operation Homefront. Fans attending this weekend's race can contribute to Operation Homefront by purchasing a "postcard" from the Kurt Busch (or Penske Racing) souvenir trailer. Fans will be able to inscribe the card with a personalized message to a serviceman or woman overseas. Penske Racing will submit the cards and 100% of the proceeds collected to OHF and the cards will be included in care packages sent directly overseas. The "Blue Deuce" will carry another cool paint scheme this weekend at Texas Motor Speedway.(Tom Roberts PR)

Tryson may leave Penske early if team isn't in Chase contention: If Kurt Busch falls isn't a factor in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship entering the season finale in Homestead next month, don't be surprised to see crew chief Pat Tryson make an early exit from the No. 2 Dodge team. "If we find ourselves out of championship contention, that's when we'll make a big change and maybe get the new (crew chief) in there and get a couple races under our belt before we show up back in Daytona," said Busch, who is currently sixth and 121 points behind Johnson in the Chase standings. Tryson announced last month that he'll leave the Penske organization at season's end and become Martin Truex Jr.'s crew chief at Michael Waltrip Racing in 2010.(Racin' Today)

Tryson not allowed at Penske race shop: Penske Racing crew chief Pat Tryson says he's only welcome at the race shop for the once-weekly debrief meeting. Because Tryson is moving to Michael Waltrip Racing at the end of this season, the team does not want him present during any preparations for 2010. "They want me to focus on this year's stuff and they've got stuff going on at the shop for next year, so they're going to work on that," Tryson said before Sunday's race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. "I'll be communicating by e-mail and phones, and I'll be in there for driver debrief on Tuesdays. Tuesday is the only day I'm welcome." It could make things difficult as Tryson and driver Kurt Busch attempt to win the championship this season. But Tryson says he's still committed to the No. 2 team, and can do a lot of his planning from home. But Penske vice president of operations Mike Nelson said the team is striking the right balance by involving Tryson in this year's planning and keeping him from the shop during preparations for 2010. "It really breaks down to 2009 vs. 2010. He's not there for the discussions that we have about 2010. That's a lot of what we're doing at the shop right now," Nelson said. "The 2009 stuff - that's something that he needs to be involved with and there's no change in his involvement with Kurt. That's the meeting that Kurt comes in for on Tuesdays. We're trying to leave that part of it seamless. We're trying not to affect anything for 2009, it's just that it doesn't make any sense for him or for us to sit down and discuss what we're doing in 2010." Tryson said he does not have permission to be at MWR the other days of the week so he can prepare for being Martin Truex Jr.'s crew chief next year. "I'm still working for Penske, and that's all I'm worried about," Tryson said. "I'm just worried about winning the championship. You can do a lot of it via e-mail, so it's not that big a deal. The biggest thing is the lack of communication with the guys, seeing the guys."(Associated Press)

Kurt Busch: A good start in Chase is key to contending: Kurt Busch begins the Chase tied for sixth in the standings, 30 points behind Mark Martin. "I know from experience how incredibly important it is to get off to a good start in the Chase," said Busch, who missed the Chase last year. "You get out there the first week after the long haul the 26 races just to make the cut for the Chase, and you come into Loudon with the most adrenaline flowing and momentum going as you've had going for you during the entire year." Kurt Busch: Different start times hurt track attendance: Like his brother, Kurt Busch believes the confusion around starting times has contributed to declining attendance and television ratings. The NFL is the clear leader in sports ratings, and it's done it with consistent starting times. If it's good for professional football, it should be good for racing, too, he said. "If we had a consistent time for our day races and a consistent time for our night races, that would be better for our fans, and I think that that would create more viewership, knowing that they knew when to find the race," Kurt Busch said.(Augusta Chronicle)

Kurt Busch is not smarter than a 5th grader: "Yeah, I guess they proved that I'm not. My question was something like this: 'If 6 squared equals 36, then what is negative 6 squared?' It was just one of those situations where you don't stop to think about it and just go with the flow. Without putting my mind in gear, I just blurted out, 'It's negative 36.' Of course the correct answer is just 36. So, the big lesson here, kids, is to engage your brain before your mouth." -- Sprint Cup driver Kurt Busch, who taped an episode of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader.(Dallas Morning News)

Kurt Busch would like to see Pocono race shortened to 400 miles: Since NASCAR Cup racing came to Pocono in 1974, every event has been 200 laps (500 miles). Over the past few years, as rules have changed, including a smaller fuel tank and softer tires, there has been talk in the garage that shortening the race would be ideal. Last year's second Pocono race took over four hours to complete. "One of the concerns is the fact that 500-mile races there seem to be a bit too long and when you can only go 35 laps on a tank of fuel it seems to just add a little bit more to the fact that it does last a long time," Kurt Busch said. "Now, 400 miles, would that make sense for Pocono? I think so, but hey, those 500-mile races are very prestigious and people always want to win on those long, long races." (Pocono Record)

Kurt Busch: wants Dodge in the news as much as we can: When the night was over, Kurt Busch had led eight laps, but finished 12th, and a bit disappointed. "I do feel a small bit of responsibility carrying the Dodge banner in NASCAR," Busch said. "We want to get Dodge in the news as much as we can." Sam Hornish showed he could move his Dodge product last night. "We sure would have loved to give them a win tonight," Hornish said. "We stand behind Chrysler and Dodge. They've been really good to us. The best thing we could have done is give them a win. We weren't able to accomplish that today. "About 100 percent of my family business work is with the big three. They're hurting. We're hurting. We believe it's going to get turned around." (Richmond Times-Dispatch)

There's always some good action on the racetrack at Richmond." (Richmond Times-Dispatch)

Kurt Busch keeping in touch with teammate Castroneves: Kurt Busch said he has kept in touch with his Penske teammate, IndyCar driver Helio Castroneves, who is on trial in federal court in Miami on tax-evasion charges. "We developed a unique bond when we raced the Rolex 24 at Daytona two years ago, and times that I had to spend in South Florida, I'd call him up and we'd get together and the friendship continued," Busch said. "When I heard about the news, I would text him and call him and tell him to keep his head up and bulldoze through this. He texted me after I won at Atlanta and said, 'Great win, buddy' and I texted him back and said, 'Good luck on your next win.' I'm hoping for the best for him." Busch sees the crewmembers who worked on Castroneves' car when he goes to the shop in Mooresville, N.C. That car is now being prepared for another driver, Will Power. "There is no sense having a dark cloud looming over your whole season, and that is why they have moved forward putting Will Power in that car," Busch said. (USA Today)

McCauley Wypall Crew Chief of the Race: Kurt Busch and crew chief Roy McCauley survived 500 laps of furious racing action this weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway. Despite setbacks with tires and radio transmissions, Busch battled back from the problems to capture his fifth victory at Thunder Valley. Busch's come from behind win earned McCauley the Wypall Wipers Crew Chief of the Race. Trouble started early for Busch and McCauley. From the get-go, Busch and the team battled radio problems that hindered Busch from communicating with the team. On lap 62, a flat right-rear tire forced the #2 Miller Lite Dodge to make an unscheduled pit stop. Even with the problems, Busch methodically worked his way through the field in route to one of the speedway's most impressive comebacks. A panel of voters; including Tony Eury Sr., a member of the local media and a Wypall Wipers representative; all agreed that McCauley's comeback deserved Crew Chief of the Race accolades. For winning the Crew Chief of the Race award, Wypall Wipers gave McCauley $1,000. At the end of the season, the crew chief with the most weekly wins will receive $20,000 and be crowned the Wypall Wipers Crew Chief of the Year. This was McCauley's first Crew Chief of the Race award in 2006, which ties him with Darian Grubb and Kenny Francis for second-place in the standings. Robbie Reiser is in the lead with two wins. But this was his first win since joining Roger Penske's team at the start of the season and taking over the famed No. 2 Dodge that nine-time Bristol winner Rusty Wallace drove. Busch celebrated his victory by jumping from his car, grabbing the checkered flag and doing "snow angels" on the finish line as a nod to the wintery weather that plagued the track all weekend. Busch, Edwards to tire test: Kurt Busch sported new colors today at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Dressed in a brand new blue firesuit, Busch took his first laps in the historic #2 Miller Lite car. Busch and three-time Atlanta Motor Speedway winner, #99-Carl Edwards, were at the track today to assist Goodyear Racing Tires with the first of a two-day test session. Busch's new crew chief, Roy McCauley said, "Today, Goodyear is looking at wear, heat, overall lap times, grip level and load. Based on all the data taken during the test, they will choose the tire that will not generate too much heat, but provide enough grip to make the driver comfortable." Edwards posted the fastest unofficial time of the day with a lap of 189.993 mph (29.18 seconds), while Busch's fastest lap was 187.869 mph (29.51 seconds). Both times were comparable to race speeds. "Atlanta...man, this place is fast," said Busch. "I enjoy coming here. I think all the drivers enjoy coming to this race track. With the new testing rules, this test is beneficial for our team," said Busch. "Goodyear gets to use our resources to test their tires, but the biggest thing is we get track time."
