Stock Car commission denies Ambrose appeal: On May 20, 2010, the National Stock Car Racing Appeals Panel heard and considered the appeal of JTG Daugherty Racing regarding the No. 47 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series car. The appeal concerned penalties issued by NASCAR following post-qualifying inspection on April 16, 2010, for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event at Texas Motor Speedway. The penalties concern Section 12-1 of the NASCAR Rule Book "Actions detrimental to stock car racing." and Section 20-2.3A: "Unapproved added weight." The Appellants argued that the pieces added to the radiator support panel near the nose of the car were simply spacers used to align the panel correctly with the bottom of the radiator. In the view of the Appeals Panel, the pieces clearly constituted added weight. Furthermore, the Appeals Panel was troubled by the thought of unapproved weight located in an area other than an approved weight container as defined in the Rule Book. Therefore, it is the unanimous decision of the National Stock Car Racing Appeals Panel to uphold the original penalties assessed by NASCAR. The Appellants have the right under Section 15 of the Rule Book to appeal this decision to the National Stock Car Racing Chief Appellate Officer.(NASCAR PR)

Ambrose to be honored: Marcos Ambrose will receive a Sportsmanship of the Year award in his second year of full-time competition during the Texas Motorsports Hall of Fame (TMHoF) dinner and induction ceremony Friday night in the Grand Ballroom of the Speedway Club at Texas Motor Speedway. "I am honored to receive the Sportsmanship award and would like to thank the Motorsports Hall of Fame panel, Eddie Gossage and everyone at Texas Motor Speedway," said Ambrose, who will be among other TMHoF award winners, such as, Kyle Busch, Jeff Gordon, John Sturbin, Robert Yates and inductee Joe Gibbs. "I have such a great appreciation for our sport. When I came into NASCAR I promised myself I was going to appreciate every single day and not get mad or angry. I remind myself every day that I'm doing something that millions of kids out there girls and guys would love to do when they grow up. I am lucky enough to be a driver. Sure, you may get disappointed at times and there are compromises. However, you can never lose sight that there are not many downs when you are a racecar driver. I love what I do. So, to be recognized like this for the first time - especially when I'm a goofy Tasmanian coming from 14,000 miles away - is pretty awesome."(JTG Daugherty Racing)

Marco Ambrose gaining confidence: After three years of driving in NASCAR competition, Ambrose feels more confident he can challenge for the win on any of the Sprint Cup tracks on the 36-race schedule. "We can contend every week," Ambrose said. "At Pocono we were crashed out in sixth or seventh with 20 laps to go. We finished top 10 at Daytona and Talladega. We've had top-10s at Bristol. So there is no single track that I'm worried about anymore. "I just need to be faster on the ovals. There is still this, 'Why can I win on a road course but not battle to make top-10 on the ovals?' I think that just over time I'll either make it, or I'll go home. It's going to be a pretty simple choice." (Lexington Dispatch)

Ambrose running Nationwide, Sprint Cup at Watkins Glen: Last year, Marcos Ambrose became a first-time NASCAR race winner taking the checkered flag in the Nationwide Series Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen International, driving for JTG-Daugherty Racing owned by Tad and Jodi Geschickter and Brad Daugherty. For his first Sprint Cup race at The Glen, he started 43rd and finished third in only his third start. Ambrose's impressive run with Wood Brothers landed him his career-best finish by crossing the finish line in third-place. Now, Ambrose is pulling double duty again at the 2.45-mile road course. On Saturday, he climbs behind the wheel of the No. 47 STP Octane Booster Toyota fielded by JTG-Daugherty Racing and looks to repeat with support from his Sprint Cup Series crew chief Frank Kerr and his No. 47 Little Debbie Toyota Racing pit crew. Then on Sunday, Ambrose aims to supersede his career-best finish [3rd] matched at Sonoma (Infineon Raceway) this season. Following Pocono on Monday, Ambrose left Monday afternoon straight to Dover International Speedway for a two-day Goodyear tire test. In addition to Ambrose running the Nationwide and Cup Series events, he will be kicking up some dirt at Black Rock Speedway in Dundee, NY on Friday night.(MWR PR)

JTG Daugherty Racing hopes to keep MWR partnership: JTG Daugherty Racing doesn’t have enough sponsorship to continue running Michael McDowell beyond next week’s NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway, team co-owner Tad Geschickter said Saturday. The team has sponsorship for Marcos Ambrose for the two Nationwide road-course events later this season but beyond that, Geschickter is not sure how many races the No. 47 car will run over the second half of the season. Tom’s snack company has sponsored the car for much of the first half of the season. Geschickter said the organization is concentrating on its Sprint Cup effort with driver Ambrose. The team is imbedded with Michael Waltrip Racing as part of a technical alliance. Whether that MWR relationship continues remains to be seen. “As far as what we’re doing next year, we haven’t started discussions with them yet,” Geschickter said. “We’ll have to renegotiate for the next year. … They’ve done a really good job. The secret’s been that we have integrated our people into their shop.”(SceneDaily.com)

Ambrose honors the Aussie Armed Forces: This week No. 37 Marcos Ambrose received a letter and a camouflage Army bucket that he is wearing at New Hampshire Motor Speedway that came from the Australian Embeds Task Force 633 International Security Assistance Force in Kabul, Afghanistan. Since arriving in Afghanistan, the Task Force has been following the success of the JTG-Daugherty Racing team and Ambrose. The letter expressed thanks to JTG-Daugherty Racing for their support of the Australian troops and of an Australian driver. They also thanked the team for reminding them of the ‘enjoyable things in life’ and ‘making a difference in their lives.’ “Some Aussie troops from Afghanistan sent the bucket hat to me as a good luck charm for this weekend at New Hampshire,” said Ambrose, who wore the hat yesterday on his flight to Manchester and today in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series garage. “I’m wearing it to support them and they’ve been wearing my Little Debbie hat to support us. They wished us the best of luck this season and told us that they have our backs.”(MWR)

No. 47 Crew Chief Frank Kerr wins Wypall Crew Chief of the Race at Infineon: Frank Kerr, crew chief for the No. 47 Little Debbie Toyota driven by Marcos Ambrose, has been named the Wypall Wipers Crew Chief of the Race following Sunday's Toyota Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway. A solid third-place qualifying run was overshadowed by disappointment on Saturday when the team lost an engine in practice, forcing them to start from the tail end of the field. Kerr decided to bring his driver down pit road on lap 12, off-sequence from the leaders, to get him some clean air. It didn't take long for Ambrose to race his way to the front of the field, eventually moving into third place, where he finished behind Kasey Kahne and Tony Stewart. In addition to the $1,000 check, the winning crew chief will receive signage to announce the win on their pit box the following week. The crew chief with the most weekly wins will be honored as the Wypall Wipers Crew Chief of the Year and will be presented a $20,000 check at the season finale in Homestead.(Wypall)

Ambrose excited about Sonoma race: Australian Marcos Ambrose is bullish about his chances ahead of next weekend's Sprint Cup Series race at Sonoma, where he expects to be fighting for victory. The former Australian V8 Supercar champion is in his first full season at NASCAR's top level but has already had two outings in road course races. Last year, he ran among the top five at Sonoma before a gearbox failure halted his race and he later finished third at Watkins Glen, which is his best result in the Sprint Cup. Ambrose, who drives for JTG Daugherty Racing with technical support from Michael Waltrip Racing, has high expectations for next weekend's event. "It is a race that we've been looking forward to for some time," said Ambrose. "We've put a lot of effort into this weekend's race. We've got a brand new car designed to go road racing. It's as wide as we can make it. "We've got a good package going to Sonoma, but the expectation is a long, hard Sunday. The track is tough, competition is fierce and there is no guarantee of success. But I feel like we've done everything we can to be ready and prepared for the race." (AutoSport.com)

Ambrose likes to hunt for buried treasures: NASCAR Driver Marcos Ambrose pored over books and maps in local libraries, seeking clues to old mining sites and buried treasure he believes he can find somewhere in North Carolina. A modern-day gold prospector, Ambrose searches streams for hours at a time with shovel and pan in hand. "For me, it's not about getting the gold," he said. "It's not having the gold. It's the quest to get it." (NY Times)

Frank Kerr wins Wypall Crew Chief of the Race award: Frank Kerr, crew chief of the No. 47 JTG Daugherty Racing Toyota driven by Marcos Ambrose, has been named the Wypall Wipers crew chief of the race for Sunday's Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. Ambrose and the Kerr-led team had a strong weekend, running in the top 10 most of the race. During the first caution on lap 26, Kerr instructed his driver to stay out, putting Ambrose in thirrd place on the restart. From there, he moved up to second. He eventually ran in the top five for much of the remainder of the race. Ambrose began to experience engine problems on lap 342 but was able to come home to a 10th-place finish. "We ran great all day," said Ambrose, who notched his first top 10 result in 2009. "Frank Kerr has saved my career, giving me good cars and equipment every week." (Wypall PR)

Ambrose OK with crew member suspension: Marcos Ambrose believes NASCAR was fair in levying a four-race suspension against a team member who chased a tire across pit road at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Jimmy Watts, the gas man for Ambrose's crew, begins his suspension with Sunday's race at Bristol Motor Speedway. Watts was also placed on probation through the end of the year, as was crew chief Frank Kerr, who NASCAR deemed responsible for the actions of the team. "It was a disaster and I think the penalty is a good one," Ambrose said Wednesday during a break in Goodyear tire testing at Lowe's Motor Speedway. (ThatsRacin.com)

No further action against Ambrose crew member: A quiet and remorseful Jimmy Watts stood outside the NASCAR hauler during the Kobalt Tools 500 to meet with NASCAR officials after he had been suspended for the remainder of the event for running onto the frontstretch grass with the race under green-flag conditions to retrieve a tire from the JTG Daugherty Racing car on lap 67. Watts, a gas man who also works for the Charlotte Fire Department, said he has been in the sport for more than seven years and just made a mistake. NASCAR threw the caution as he chased the tire. The tire had rolled on to the frontstretch grass when it got loose from the JTG Daugherty team of driver Marcos Ambrose and was knocked away by the Yates Racing team. “I saw the tire going away and it was a reaction – the wrong one,” Watts said. Watts said he “certainly did not” think that the tire would roll that far across the grass and by the time he was in the middle of it, he realized he was in a bad position. Watts said he hoped to be back next week but was waiting to talk to NASCAR officials to see if any additional penalties would be issued.(SceneDaily)
