Michael Waltrip News

Mayfield possibly to MWR? Michael Waltrip, who will graduate to team ownership with Toyota next year, says he has offered a job to driver Jeremy Mayfield, who recently has expressed dissatisfaction with his current situation at Evernham Racing. "The ball's in his court," Waltrip told SPEED Channel after his qualifying run Friday at New Hampshire, referring to Mayfield. "Hopefully it will all come together, and as soon as it does we'll let the world know." That, meanwhile, would open the seat in Evernham's No. 19 for Elliott Sadler, who apparently is looking for a way out of his deal with Robert Yates. Other reports say Sadler could take sponsor M&Ms with him to the No. 19, although that could not be confirmed. Robert Yates and Doug Yates were not at the track Friday, although Slugger Labbe, crew chief for Sadler teammate Dale Jarrett and the No. 88, hinted, "Where there's smoke, there's fire." Mayfield would complete the lineup for Waltrip's three-car Toyota stable. Waltrip will drive one of the cars, with NAPA sponsorship. He has hired Jarrett and landed sponsor UPS for the second car, and Mayfield would drive the so-far-vacant third car, to be backed by Domino's and Burger King. Mayfield had no comment on the reports. Sadler denied he had had any negotiations with Evernham, and he has a year left on his contract with Yates. He admitted he had had a long talk with Yates this week at the Indianapolis tests. Waltrip's 3rd driver? Landing UPS allows {Michael} Waltrip to go full speed ahead on a three-car team. He has NAPA for the hood of the Toyota he'll drive and a joint Burger King/Domino's sponsorship for a third car. Semi-retired Bill Elliott, 50, has been rumored as a candidate, but Waltrip, 43, said he expects to hire someone younger than himself and Jarrett, 49. Disgruntled Evernham Motorsports driver Jeremy Mayfield, 37, is another possibility. Elliott qualified a Waltrip Racing Chevrolet 24th for Sunday's race. It's the first of five races, including the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard, the 1988 series champion is driving this season to launch the Burger King sponsorship. If Waltrip were to make an offer, Elliott sounds willing to listen. "Whether I will do a full-time deal next year or not, I don't know. I won't say yes and I won't say no," he said. "It has to be the right situation. It's hard for me to let go in a lot of ways." (Indy Star)

UPS follows Jarrett to Michael Waltrip's Racing Toyota: NASCAR driver Dale Jarrett will bring United Parcel Service Inc. along for the ride when he moves to Michael Waltrip Racing in 2007. Atlanta-based UPS has reported a two-year deal with Michael Waltrip Racing to sponsor Jarrett in a Toyota Camry for the 2007 and 2008 seasons of the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series. Earlier this year, Jarrett agreed to move to the Waltrip organization and race a Toyota Camry starting with the 2007 Daytona 500. The decision to join Michael Waltrip Racing also places UPS among the first sponsors to adorn a Toyota Camry in 2007, which is the manufacturer's inaugural season in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series. UPS has supported Jarrett since 2001, when it first became a NASCAR team sponsor and began its popular "Race the Truck" advertising campaign. That campaign has made Jarrett's name synonymous with UPS and its "big brown truck" and UPS said maintaining that brand connection was a factor in its decision. (Yahoo!/Biz Journal)

Elliott test MWR car at MI. and KY.: his week, Bill Elliott is testing the No. 00 Burger King NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series entry at the Milwaukee Mile and Kentucky Speedway in preparation for the five races he will compete in this season for Michael Waltrip Racing. "Today, we were just shaking down the Burger King car at the Milwaukee Mile so that we can be well prepared for the race at Loudon (New Hampshire International Speedway) in a few weeks," Elliott stated. "We'll be at Kentucky Speedway tomorrow to work on the car for our first race of the season at Chicagoland Speedway. We'll test at the track for two days. I think Chicagoland will be one of the most challenging tracks for us." As Elliott helps Michael Waltrip Racing continue to lay groundwork for 2007, Michael Waltrip prepares for his role as a team owner and driver of the No. 55 NAPA Toyota Camry. In addition to the relationship with NAPA, Michael Waltrip Racing announced a partnership with Domino's Pizza (DPZ) and Burger King Corporation (BKC) to be co-primary sponsors of their second 2007 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series team. "We announced our second NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series team yesterday at Michigan International Speedway," Michael Waltrip said, who will be on site at Kentucky Speedway during the test session this Wednesday as team owner.  (MWR PR)

MWR Sponsorship announcement: Michael Waltrip Racing (MWR) announced Sunday it has formed a unique partnership with two marquee brands – Domino's Pizza and Burger King Corporation to be co-primary sponsors of its second 2007 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series team. "When we first approached Burger King and Domino's Pizza, we knew we were thinking outside of the box and didn't know if two food brands would be willing to work together to sponsor the same team," said Michael Waltrip. "We took the risk and are very excited to have two of the world's most recognized brands sponsoring the #00 NASCAR Nextel Cup team." "It's not unusual for two or more sponsors to split a sponsorship season," said Ty Norris, General Manager for Michael Waltrip Racing. "However, this is the first time that two companies within the same industry agreed to be sponsors of the same car during the same season. This is another example of the unprecedented approach Michael Waltrip Racing is taking to becoming a multi-car NASCAR Nextel Cup team organization." Domino's will kick off the season at the Daytona 500 and continue as the primary sponsor through the May race in Darlington, SC. A Domino's paint scheme will also adorn the #00 Toyota Camry at the August Nextel Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway. Domino's will deliver its final five races during the Chase for the Nextel Cup Series championship. The #00-Burger King Toyota Camry will hit the track Memorial Day weekend at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Charlotte, NC, and cap off the regular season under the lights at Richmond International Raceway. Five Chase for the NASCAR Nextel Cup races, including the final race at Homestead-Miami Speedway, will feature the Burger King paint scheme. The split-season sponsorship allows Domino's and Burger King to continue their respective relationships with Michael Waltrip Racing, while positioning both companies at the forefront of the changing motorsports industry. The team along with input from both sponsors is in negotiations to secure a driver and will make a separate announcement once a driver has been determined.(Michael Waltrip Racing PR)

Waltrip Racing continues relationship despite report: "I think a lot of people got confused when we took the opportunity to move our NEXTEL Cup operation down the road to Jimmy Spencer's old shop," said Waltrip. "We saw an opportunity to give Larry Carter and his team working on the Burger King Chevrolets, a location that allows them to stay totally focused on preparing for our upcoming five Cup races with Bill Elliott in 2006. Our Busch Series program, along with our Marketing, Licensing and Business Affairs departments remain at Fitz-Bradshaw in Mooresville, NC. Last Fall we partnered with Armando Fitz for the entire 2006 season and that won't change." While everything is status-quo with Waltrip's 2006 programs, there is eager anticipation for 2007. In just a few weeks, the first phase of Waltrip Racing World will open for Toyota's entry into the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series. Waltrip Racing World, scheduled to open to the public mid 2007, is a fan destination complete with entertainment and interactive experiences. It will also house all of Michael Waltrip Racing's Toyota backed teams. "Phase One of Waltrip Racing World is essentially our fabrication and manufacturing facility," Waltrip said. "In some ways it could be viewed as the heart and soul of our entire campus. Our first Toyota Camry was completed last week and we will build many more at the new location. This building is exclusively dedicated to the preparation, testing, development and eventually racing of our 2007 Camry's." (MWR PR)

M. Waltrip announces the Waltrip Challenge: Michael Waltrip has partnered with The Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research Foundation to announce the ‘Preserving Your Memory’ campaign in efforts to help fund Alzheimer’s disease (AD) research. The campaign’s objective is to raise $100 million dollars over the next five years for continued studies.  “There is no cure for Alzheimer’s,” said Waltrip. “Millions of people suffer from the disease and most families have been touched by it in some way or another. I know, through personal experience, the devastation and destruction this disease causes to our loved ones. It is a disease that strikes fear in my heart for those who are directly and indirectly affected by the disease.” Waltrip is challenging people to make a donation to help find a cure for Alzheimer's disease. “‘The Waltrip Challenge’ is a personal fundraising tactic we will be promoting in the upcoming months in conjunction with the Foundation's new campaign launch,” said Waltrip. “Its purpose is to raise money for Alzheimer’s research and increase awareness throughout the country and the NASCAR community.” Through visiting www.waltripchallenge.com or www.alzinfo.org websites, people can purchase a ‘Preserving Your Memory’ Forget-Me-Not pin, or a Get-Etched Memories product, which will generate much needed funds to aid Alzheimer’s disease research. To bring in additional donations, ‘The Waltrip Challenge’ initiative will also include a ‘Race Day Experience’ sweepstakes with Waltrip himself. (MWR)

M. Waltrip names new VP for MWR: Michael Waltrip Racing announced that Robert B. Brannan III (Bob) will be the Vice President of Licensing for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series multi-team operation, which will field Toyota Camrys in 2007. "I'm really excited to become a part of Michael's organization as they prepare multiple full-time Toyota teams for competition next season," said Brannan, who will begin his new job in mid-June. "Michael Waltrip Racing is set to help Toyota's seamless entry into NASCAR's elite division. I'm pleased to have the opportunity to be associated with Michael's company and be a contributing member to the teams." Brannan brings a wealth of financial and licensing expertise to Michael Waltrip Racing. He has a long list of credits and most recently was the President of Cabarrus Bank & Trust in Concord, N.C. M. Waltrip buys #74 Cope entry: Michael Waltrip's consecutive start streak of 261 races will get to 262. Waltrip's Waltrip-Jasper Racing has bought the ride of the No. 74 McGlynn Racing Dodge and driver Derrike Cope for the Coca-Cola 600, according to a Waltrip team spokesman.   The car will have the NAPA logo on the car and might carry the No. 55. The owner points goes to McGlynn and not to Waltrip, whose team sits 36th in owner points and likely will drop following the race. Waltrip likely will put a new engine in the car but must use the car Cope qualified in the event.  (NASCAR Scene Daily)

Waltrip/Jarrett make it Official, Jarrett in Toyota in '07:  Jarrett, 49, was officially named as one of Waltrip's drivers for next season when the Toyota Camry makes its debut in the Nextel Cup Series. Waltrip and Jarrett will be teammates on the two-car team of Michael Waltrip Racing. The move ends Jarrett's 12-year relationship with Robert Yates Racing, where 29 of his 32 career Cup victories came. Jarrett, who is 12th in points heading into Saturday's Dodge Charger 500 at Darlington, denied published reports that suggested that he was lured with an eight-figure salary and the promise of Toyota dealership options. "[There is] a lot of stuff out there that I came here because I was getting paid millions and millions of dollars and Toyota dealerships here and there, it is just funny to see what people think and how things get started," Jarrett said. "I know there is a value for some things that I have being a former champion, so all of those things added up to a lot. "The reason I am doing this is not about money. This is to help Michael. I told my wife that this was going to be one of the biggest things to happen in NASCAR, for a driver with a new manufacturer to start his own organization." Waltrip also said it had nothing to do with money.  Jarrett already has said that 2008 will be his final season behind the wheel, and last week at Richmond confirmed he has had discussions with ESPN about joining the network as a television analyst. ESPN will take a leading role in Cup coverage beginning in 2007. Jarrett has also reportedly expressed interest in team ownership or managment. A sponsor and a car number were not immediately announced, but Waltrip said that he had funding in place for his programs. Waltrip did not say whether Jarrett's current sponsor, UPS, would go along with him. (In part from NASCAR.com)

Jarrett/Waltrip Announcement Today? Michael Waltrip Racing has scheduled an announcement Saturday at 1 p.m. Waltrip will debut a two-car Toyota team next season, and has been lobbying former Cup champion Dale Jarrett to drive for him. Jarrett, in the final year of his contract with Robert Yates Racing, said April 29 at Talladega that his decision would be made "in the next two or three weeks." (Post Courier) Live announcement will televised on NASCAR Live!

All but two of Jarrett's 32 career Cup wins have come behind the wheel of a blue-ovaled automobile, as did his 1999 Winston Cup title. In addition, Jarrett's father, Ned, won both of his Cup titles as a Ford factory driver, and Dale Jarrett Ford is one of the largest Ford dealerships in the country, located in Monroe, N.C. about one hour north of Darlington. Team Shuffle at #55 Waltrip Racing: #55-Michael Waltrip heads into Richmond International Raceway this weekend looking for a little magic to get the #55 NAPA Dodge back into the top-35 in NASCAR owner's points. This obviously isn't where we had hoped to be coming into the 10th race of 2006," said Waltrip. "In an effort to address the situation, we decided to make some changes." Waltrip has brought in NASCAR veterans Bobby Kennedy, Larry Carter and Jason Oversteet to work on the car and call the race. Derrick Finley will reassume his role as Bill Davis Racing team engineer. "It is extremely important that we use all of the resources we have at both Bill Davis Racing and Michael Waltrip Racing to get our program where it needs to be," said Waltrip. "Bobby, Larry and Jason have been working on getting our Burger King cars built that we will run with Bill Elliott this year. Getting those guys to the track and working with our NAPA car will not only help us now, but it will also allow them to gather 'at-track' data for that effort as well. "(MWR PR)

Waltrip/Elliott Burger King: Michael Waltrip Racing announced Friday that it will team with Burger King and NASCAR champion Bill Elliott for a five-race schedule this season. Elliott will pilot the #00 Burger King Chevrolet at Chicago, New Hampshire, Indianapolis, California and Homestead. Waltrip said the team plans to expand to a full-time NEXTEL Cup venture next season, running Toyotas. Waltrip said sponsorship and driver plans for next year were still up in the air. But for now, he's thrilled to have a veteran like Elliott behind the wheel. Burger King also announced donations to both the Speedway Children's Charities and the National Motorsports Press Association. Waltrip quotes of the day: (On fielding Chevrolets for his team despite driving Dodges himself) "I'm like Switzerland, I can drive anything. Chevrolet is the car to beat. They've won two of the first three races. When we were planning this project, in order to lure Mr. Elliott, we wanted to get the best car he could drive. Right now that appears to be Chevrolet. I'll stay in a Dodge, I suppose, but I am going to be in a Toyota truck later this year, and I've got a call in to Ford." (AMS Pit Notes)

NASCAR fans familiar with the Waltrip brothers and their long-standing relationship with Aaron’s Sales & Lease Ownership know that for years, Michael Waltrip has famously and repeatedly turned down older brother Darrell’s requests to drive the Aaron’s Dream Machine. However, in a surprise announcement made during the final moments of a Darrell Waltrip Roast benefiting the Boys’ and Girls’ Club of Tennessee, Darrell’s wife Stevie dramatically handed the three-time NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series Champion one of Michael’s racing helmets along with her permission to drive the No. 99 Aaron’s Dream Machine during the Martinsville race. Bawel will serve on the Board of Directors and will be active in business management and sanctioning body relationships for the new company. "I have been in the sport as a driver for 22 years and the logical progression for me was ownership at the highest level, the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series," Waltrip said. "This is such a big step, that I wanted to partner with someone who has intimate knowledge about ownership at this level. Doug Bawel and I have been friends for a number of years and I have always respected the way he handled himself in the garage and with NASCAR." "I learned quickly that Michael is a goal oriented person," Bawel stated. He is a talented driver and a proven NASCAR Busch Series car owner, but most importantly as he moves into NASCAR's premier series, he is a man with a vision that likes to take ideas from paper to reality. Additionally, Domino's will be a primary sponsor on Waltrip's No. 55 Dodge during one NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race. "Michael has done a great job in our commercials and serving as a Domino's Pizza spokesman," said Ken Calwell, chief marketing officer for Domino's Pizza. "We are happy to build on our relationship and to continue our participation in this exciting sport." Domino's became the "Official Pizza of NASCAR" in 2003. "Since our original announcement of being named the Official Pizza of NASCAR, we have propelled from the number three pizza choice among NASCAR fans to number one," said Calwell. Finley to serve as Waltrip's Crew Chief:  Bill Davis Racing Tuesday confirmed Derrick Finley would switch teams within the organization and serve as crew chief for Michael Waltrip and the No. 55 NAPA Auto Parts Dodge crew. Along with Finley, the majority of the crewmembers who worked on the No. 22 Caterpillar Dodge with former BDR driver Scott Wimmer in 2005 will move to the No. 55 team. "Derrick has done a good job with the No. 22 car this year," Davis said. "Putting him and his experienced group of guys with Michael is going to make the entire transition back into a two-car team easier for all of us. "Derrick is a very intelligent individual and a hard worker. I am confident he, Michael and the rest of the guys have what it takes to get the No. 55 NAPA car up front." Earlier this year, BDR entered into a partnership with Waltrip and NAPA to field a second team in 2006. Davis announced last Thursday Dave Blaney had returned to his racing organization to drive the No. 22 Caterpillar Dodge in the Nextel Cup Series, with Kevin Hamlin joining him as crew chief. Next season will be the first time since 2003 that Davis has fielded two full-time NASCAR Nextel Cup teams. "I'm really looking forward to having two teams," Finley said. "Having Blaney and Hamlin's input is going to be valuable. I've known Hamlin for a long time. We'll work well together (and) it's a big help to be able to take most of my guys with me. (BDR)

Commission Waltrip penalty overturned: Michael Waltrip's penalties for allegedly making an inappropriate gesture during a race last month were overturned Wednesday. NASCAR had accused Waltrip of gesturing during the Sept. 18 race in New Hampshire after Robby Gordon threw his helmet at Waltrip following an accident involving the drivers. Waltrip was fined $10,000, docked 25 points and placed on probation until the end of the year. Waltrip denied making the gesture and appealed to the three-member National Stock Car Racing Commission. The panel said two members found TV footage ``inconclusive,'' and the commission then voted to rescind the penalties.  (Yahoo!)

Parts seized at Talladega: Michael Waltrip's #15 NAPA Chevrolet had a steel spacer confiscated by NASCAR at Talladega, measuring 14 inches across which blocked the holes in the wheel/rim. It fit between the wheel and the hub. NASCAR rules make it illegal to block the rim openings, according to [DEI's] Steve Hmiel teams use to tape the openings closed allowing the cars to go faster. NASCAR allows a spacer but only 7 inches in diameter. (Insider Racing News)

Best Western joins Waltrip and Bill Davis Racing: Best Western International, the Official Hotel of NASCAR, announced that it has partnered with Bill Davis Racing (BDR) as an associate sponsor on the 2006 Dodge Charger driven in the NEXTEL Cup Series by Michael Waltrip. “We are thrilled to be teaming with Bill Davis Racing in 2006,” said Dorothy Dowling, senior vice president of marketing for Best Western. “A respected member of the NASCAR community who has helped to set the standard for the sport, Bill brings a wealth of experience and demonstrated success to the business. With the addition of Michael, Bill Davis Racing provides us with a complete, marketable package.” Bill Davis announced last week his plans for re-establishing BDR as a multi-car team through a partnership with Waltrip. In January 2004, Best Western entered into a multi-year agreement as the Official Hotel of NASCAR. During the 2004 and 2005 seasons, the company has also served as an associate sponsor of Waltrip and the DEI-owned #15 NAPA Chevy. In addition, the hotel chain has partnered with Michael Waltrip Racing for the last two years, serving as primary sponsor of Waltrip’s Busch Series #99 Chevy for the 2004 Bashas’ Supermarkets 200 at Phoenix International Raceway; and the 2005 Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen International. Its Official Waltrip and NAPA heading to Bill Davis Racing: NASCAR driver Michael Waltrip and NAPA AUTO PARTS announced today they have entered into a partnership with Bill Davis Racing (BDR) for the 2006 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series season. Nine victories and eight poles are shared between the parties including three Daytona 500 rings and a Southern 500 victory. Bill Davis Racing’s achievements lured Waltrip to their High Point, N.C. race shop. “I like the way Bill does business and he has created a strong organization,” Waltrip explained. “NAPA and I look forward to continuing our winning ways at Bill Davis Racing on the track, as well as extending our successful marketing efforts off the track.” Waltrip and NAPA were teamed up by the late Dale Earnhardt in 2001 when their initial race together put them in victory lane at the Daytona 500. Since then, the pair has taken advantage of their union to create one of the strongest partnerships in the sport. Davis currently fields one full-time NEXTEL Cup Series team with Scott Wimmer driving the No. 22 Caterpillar Dodge Charger. In 2004, Davis expanded his operations to house three full-time truck teams in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. The teams include Mike Skinner in the No. 5 Toyota Tundra, Bill Lester in the No. 22 Toyota Tundra, and Johnny Benson in the No. 23 Toyota Tundra. “NAPA and Michael Waltrip are the perfect combination to re-establish our two-car Cup team in 2006,” said Davis. “NAPA and Michael are held in high regard in our sport and have been successful in each Series they have competed. We plan to build on their success and create a very competitive team next year and beyond.” (Bill Davis Racing PR)

Waltrip to join BDR today, with NAPA Sponsorship: Bill Davis Racing hasn't visited Victory Lane since 2002. But with the addition of a second car and solid sponsorship next season, Michael Waltrip says he is optimistic the team can contend for a victory at Daytona International Speedway in February and eventually work its way into the top 10. "There's no reason, with Bill's experience and what I bring to the table, that we can't do that," Waltrip said. Waltrip will announce Friday that he has signed a one-year deal to drive a second car for Davis next season. Davis entered two cars in most races from 2000 to 2003 but cut back last season and now fields only Scott Wimmer's No. 22 car. Wimmer hasn't had a top-10 finish this season and enters Sunday's race at Dover (Del.) International Speedway 33rd in points. "A lot of people might look at it as a step back, but I certainly don't," Waltrip said. Waltrip will bring NAPA Auto Parts, his current sponsor at Dale Earnhardt Inc., with him to Davis; Waltrip, 42, announced in July that he would not return to DEI in 2006. (USA Today)

DEI to appeal penalty: Waltrip's penalty for using "an inappropriate gesture during a televised broadcast" Sunday at Loudon will be appealed, Richie Gilmore, the general manager for Dale Earnhardt Inc., said yesterday. Waltrip was fined 25 points, car owner Teresa Earnhardt was fined 25 points, and Waltrip was fined $10,000. "In looking at the tape, we don't see anywhere during the entire incident where Michael did what he is accused of doing," Gilmore said. (Salem-Journal)

Sep. 14, 2005:

So what's up with Waltrip and NAPA? (Michael) Waltrip will finish the season with Tony Gibson calling the shots for his crew. When he leaves at the end of the season, he is expected to take sponsor NAPA with him. That means that Earnhardt and Martin Truex Jr., who is moving up from the Busch series, will be the only two full-time teams at DEI next season. The team may field a third car on a part-time basis with Paul Menard driving it, Gilmore said. (Newsday)

Waltrip to Bill Davis Racing? The upcoming driver swaps on the Nextel Cup circuit could find Michael Waltrip racing under the banner of Bill Davis Racing in 2006, and he might be taking his current sponsor, NAPA, with him. Waltrip has informed his current team, Dale Earnhardt Inc., that he won't be returning to the No. 15 Chevy he has driven for the past five seasons. A move to Davis' team would mesh nicely with Waltrip's expected plans to join Toyota's team when that manufacturer moves to the Cup circuit, because Davis already is running Toyotas in the Craftsman Truck Series. Waltrip to Gibbs in #11? Sources close to Michael Waltrip say he is in the running to take a full-time ride with Joe Gibbs, after the departure of Jason Leffler. Gibbs may move the FedEx sponsorship from his new third team to Bobby Labonte's team next season, and that would open up a quarterpanel for NAPA, Waltrip's long-time sponsor at DEI. (Salem-Journal)

Waltrip Statement on Waltrip Entertainment Center: Michael and Buffy Waltrip announced today their plans to build an innovative racing facility in Cornelius, NC, adjacent to Interstate 77 entitled Waltrip Racing World. The Waltrip Racing World campus will encompass over eight acres and more than 110,000 square foot of buildings, housing the world’s first truly interactive race shop that will be accessible to the public. Waltrip Racing plans to relocate its existing NASCAR Busch Series team and driver development programs to this facility, which will serve as the centerpiece of the entertainment for the interactive fan experience. “Since 1996, we have operated Michael Waltrip Racing out of our backyard,” Michael Waltrip explained. “I have dreamt of constructing the perfect building for a race team and this is the ideal location.”  The facility Waltrip speaks of is a former 12-screen movie theater, located in a very visible and highly trafficked location, lending itself perfectly to converting it to the fan friendly experience Waltrip wants. “NASCAR is a family sport and this, in our opinion, is the definitive family destination. We see the fans packing up their cars and motorhomes and setting out to experience Waltrip Racing World and the area that surrounds it. The value of letting the fans touch, hear and smell the workings of our NASCAR team seven days a week not only benefits the fans, but gives our sponsors more exposure. We believe the fans will come during the week to watch the teams prepare for the races and on the weekends to watch NASCAR action on one of the giant movie screens as part of the experience.” Waltrip Racing World will consist of a skywalk through the facility, live pit road practice sessions and team training, movies, retail store, restaurant and more including a 40-space private motor coach area. Waltrip to Gibbs? Speculation has arisen that Michael Waltrip may vacate his seat in the No. 15 DEI Chevy prior to the end of the 2005 season. Rumors are swirling around the garage that Waltrip has been offered to drive the No. 11 Chevy at Joe Gibbs Racing for the last ten races of the season and next year. Both teams have denied the report. (Motorsports.com)

Waltrip and Eury Jr. to Toyota? Waltrip is headed eventually to the Toyota camp - along with Eury Jr., according to one Detroit source very close to the situation - in what is reported to be a top-dollar project. "Toyota has offered Michael and Tony Jr. so much money they can't turn it down," the source said. Waltrip has been eyed for a Toyota ride for more than a year, in part because older brother Darrell runs a Toyota team on the Craftsman Truck Series. NASCAR has been pushing Toyota to step up its presence in the sport, for the added marketing punch that would provide. And Waltrip could give Toyota quick credibility. Toyota isn't expected to field a Cup team until 2007, although a Busch team is a possibility in 2006. Toyota does have a formidable presence in the truck series. The Toyota option? (Salem-Journal)

Waltrip to Hass CNC? NAPA with him? Sources in the NASCAR garage indicate that Waltrip is working on a deal to drive for Hass CNC Racing next year. That team fields the No. 0 Chevrolets that Mike Bliss now drives. Sources say NAPA, which has been Waltrip's sponsor, could go with him, leaving DEI with the No. 8 Chevrolets driven by Dale Earnhardt Jr. and the No. 1 Chevrolets driven by Martin Truex Jr., who will move up from Busch to Nextel Cup in 2006. Waltrip and DEI to part was in 2006: Dale Earnhardt Incorporated (DEI) and Michael Waltrip announced today they will no longer be together beginning in 2006. The DEI No. 15 NAPA Chevrolet has been driven by Michael Waltrip, a fan-favorite, in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series for the past five seasons where he earned four victories; including two Daytona 500 wins in 2001 and 2003. “All of us at DEI want to thank Michael for all his contributions to our organization and wish him well as he moves on in his career,” said Richie Gilmore, DEI’s Vice President of Motorsports. “Dale and Teresa gave me an opportunity with a winning organization that I have been proud to be an integral part of for the last five years,” Waltrip said. “My professional relationship with DEI is ending, but my personal relationships have ties that are deep-rooted. Therefore, my decision to leave DEI is a difficult one. Our individual visions for the future are taking different courses, but our goals are the same- to be successful in the premier division of NASCAR.” Gilmore added, “DEI’s NASCAR Nextel Cup focus for 2006 will be to sharpen every entity of our race teams by preparing the No. 1 Bass Pro Shops Chevrolet, driven by Martin Truex Jr., and the No. 8 Budweiser Chevrolet driven by Dale Earnhardt Jr., for the championship. Additionally, we are working diligently with our current partner, NAPA, on returning to the No. 15 car.”  (DEI PR)

Aaron's and Waltrip Donate to VJGC:  Aaron Rents (RNT) announced its commitment to support the mission of Victory Junction Gang, a retreat for sick children founded by NASCAR's Petty family in honor of the late Adam Petty. Mike Hickey, Aaron's Vice President of Management Development said, "I know I speak for every associate at Aaron's when I say that we are honored to be connected with the Victory Junction Gang and with Michael Waltrip's amazing fund-raising efforts on behalf of the camp." Aaron's associates and stores contributed more than $100,000 in donations for the camp as part of an overall $1 million donation to the facility made by Aaron's Dream Machine driver Michael Waltrip. Waltrip's donation was comprised of funds from various sources, including monies raised when he completed the Las Vegas Marathon as part of his ambitious Operation Marathon program earlier this year. Aaron's executives recently attended the first anniversary celebration at Victory Junction during which a statue of Michael Waltrip running the marathon was unveiled in front of the newly named Michael Waltrip Operation Marathon Sports Center. In attendance were Aaron's Sales & Lease Ownership President Ken Butler, and members of Aaron's senior management team including Greg Bellof, Rich Lamprey, Mitch Paull and Mark Rudnick.  (Aaron's Lease PR)

DEI to renew NAPA and Waltrip: Now that Dale Earnhardt, Inc. has signed Martin Truex, Jr. to a three-year contract extension, the next order of business is to renew the deals for driver Michael Waltrip and his sponsor, NAPA, DEI Director of Motorsports Richie Gilmore said Saturday night. “Michael’s been a great driver for us and a great cheerleader for us this year and a great teammate,” Gilmore said. “I think in the next couple of weeks, we’ll have it all worked out. The Martin (Truex, Jr.) deal just took up a lot more time than we thought, but everybody’s happy with how it worked out.” As for Waltrip’s contract extension — something of a surprise to some, as his job was rumored to be in jeopardy — Gilmore said, “We’re still working out the details on it. We think we can get it done in the next couple of weeks. We got a lot done today with NAPA and Michael and we feel like we can definitely get it done.” (SPEED)

Both Eury's missed Daytona drivers Meeting: Eyebrows were raised when both Tony Eury, Sr., director of competition for Dale Earnhardt, Inc., and son Tony Jr., crew chief for Michael Waltrip’s DEI Chevrolet, both skipped the pre-race driver’s meeting. Although many rumors flew, the truth was a lot more simple, according to Richie Gilmore, who oversees DEI racing operations. The elder Eury had flown home to prepare for a NASCAR Busch Series test at Loudon, N.H., on Tuesday with DEI development driver Ryan Moore, while Eury, Jr., simply lost track of time while prepping Waltrip’s car for the race. (SPEED)

Waltrip and Earnhardt, Jr. talking: After beginning the week with three days of team meetings, Director of Motorsports Richie Gilmore said all is well again at Dale Earnhardt Inc. Dale Earnhardt Jr. apologized to Michael Waltrip's crew Monday after spinning his teammate in Sunday's Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe's Motor Speedway. Gilmore said he and owner Teresa Earnhardt addressed the issue first thing Monday morning, gathering DEI managers, then crew members and finally the drivers.  "We wanted the drivers to talk amongst themselves first," Gilmore said. "That was the most important thing that Teresa wanted to handle was talk about what happened and get past it." (Times-Dispatch)

Eury on DEI Wreck: Dale Earnhardt Jr. rallied from a lap down to get back in the top 10, then crashed himself and teammate Michael Waltrip with a crucial mistake Sunday night.   "I don't know what happened," Waltrip said in measured tones. "I'm trying to figure it out. I was running with the 8 car and I think he got into me. Tony Eury Sr., director of competition at Dale Earnhardt Inc., was Earnhardt's crew chief until this season, and he tried in vain to control his frustration with watching two of his cars taken out in the same wreck.  "I don't know what his problem is with Michael, but it will be fixed tomorrow, I guarantee it," Eury said. (MaconTelegraph)

Waltrip's DEI Crewman wins Challenge: At 5-foot-6 and 219 pounds, Kevin Pennell doesn't look like a star.  He's a jackman for Michael Waltrip's Nextel Cup team - the man on Waltrip's pit crew who hoists the No.15 Chevrolet up and lowers it on every pit stop.  But on Thursday night at the NASCAR Nextel Pit Crew Challenge at the Charlotte Coliseum, Pennell had his moment. He was crowned the "Best Jackman" in the individual skills competition, which meant his very own trip to Victory Lane and a $10,000 check. (ThatsRacin)

Waltrip and Green Called to Hauler: The two were called there following a wreck on Lap 206 in which Waltrip hit Green repeatedly from behind, causing an accident.  Waltrip had blamed Green for an accident Waltrip had on Lap 7. The were bad feelings also lingering between the two from the race at Martinsville, Va., last month in which Green hit Waltrip from behind.  "NASCAR told us not to get around each other. That suits me because the only two times I've had him behind me this year, he spun me out," Waltrip said. Green wasn't immediately available for comment after the race.  NASCAR officials said additional penalties were unlikely. (ThatsRacin)

Earnhardt Jr. no word on Waltrip

More on DEI, Waltrip and NAPA: Hanging over Michael Waltrip, again, is his future at Dale Earnhardt Inc., once more a topic of conversation, and sponsor NAPA may be the power that ultimately makes the call. NAPA executives like Waltrip, but NAPA is also a demanding sponsor. There is speculation if Waltrip leaves DEI that NAPA might take its money and follow him.  Waltrip said he'd prefer to stay, and he figures he's making his case. (Salem-Journal)

Waltrip most likely to stay with DEI? Considering that the drivers who will be available after the 2006 season are far superior to those who will be available at the end of this year, it would be advantageous for DEI and NAPA, the No. 15's primary sponsor, to maintain the status quo. According to Gilmore, one driver who won't be jumping into the No. 15 any time soon, especially if NAPA remains on the car, is Shane Hmiel. Hmiel has close ties with DEI; the company must approve any deal for him to race with another team. Hmiel wouldn't suit NAPA (Sporting News)
