Ryan Newman would like to see drivers fight with fists: Ryan Newman drove through the melee. He would like to see drivers use their fists, not their race cars, when they have a problem. “I think it would have been a whole lot better if they’d go back and got to fight it out a little bit,” he said. “That would be a lot more interesting than getting black-flagged. Either way they’ve made their call and it is what it is.” (Florida Times-Union)

Ryan Newman: Cars will perform better without spoiler: Not only will the cars look better, but more importantly, they will perform better. That’s what Ryan Newman said during Wednesday’s weekly NASCAR teleconference. He said the move will improve racing, especially on big tracks such as Michigan International Speedway. “The biggest thing that we’re going to see with this spoiler, this is speculation from my standpoint, is the way the spoiler is designed, there’s going to be a lot more surface area of that spoiler on the quarter panels,” Newman said. “The side drafting on the straightaway is going to be even bigger than it was with the old style car. I don’t think we have but 50 percent of that side drafting down the straightaway on the current car with the wing on it. “The fans will see more racing, even on the straightaways, if that makes sense. You’ll see more side by side, back and forth, nose to head with the competitor down the straightaways, which I think will make places like Michigan and California, some of the tracks that are bigger, notorious for being a little boring through the middle of the race, more exciting throughout the entire race.” (Grand Rapids Press)

Newman: Owning Cup team not one of my goals: Ryan Newman asked if he would like to be an owner/driver? "Honestly, that's not one of my goals. Other people have tried even before Tony. So I don't think that that is something that I'm interested in. I know that there are - it's kind of like when things are on a grand scale, when they're good they're great. But when they're bad, they're really bad. And I don't have any will to have those potential bad headaches. I think Tony's done a great job and Gene Haas as well as far as laying ground work and everything else in the shop. I don't know that you could ever try to repeat that or duplicate that." Newman reflects on Veterans Day: The timing was only appropriate for Ryan Newman to reflect on what it has meant to drive a race car sponsored by the U.S. Army. He spoke about the sponsorship the day before Veterans Day, an annual United States holiday observed on Nov. 11 to honor military veterans. "My Army heart is heavier this week based on what happened in Fort Hood last week," said Newman, driver of the No. 39 U.S. Army/Haas-Automation Chevy. "Since tomorrow (Wednesday) is Veterans Day, every citizen needs to sit back and offer remembrance to our Veterans for their unselfish commitment and fight to preserve freedom. I am so proud to drive the U.S. Army car, it's been an eye-opening experience this year with the Army as our primary sponsor. I've had the privilege of visiting with so many Soldiers at Army bases, Walter Reed Army Medical Center and at the track. They are my heroes and it's an incredible feeling and honor knowing that our Stewart-Haas Racing team represents more than one million Soldiers in the NASCAR world. That is awesome!"(U.S. Army Racing)

Newman's No. 39 crew wins Tissot Pit Road Precision Award: Ryan Newman's crew won the Tissot Pit Road Precision Award in Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. It was the second Tissot win of the season for the No. 39 team, which became the fifth multiple winner of the weekly competition. The first Tissot win for Newman's U.S. Army/Haas Automation team came at the April race in Phoenix. Newman's Chevy spent the least amount of time on pit road in New Hampshire - 137.708 seconds - during the 300-lap race at the 1.058-mile oval. The workmanlike effort on pit road helped Chase driver Newman to a seventh-place finish. The No. 39 over-the-wall crew at New Hampshire consisted of: Scott Brzozowski (front tire changer), Josh Mick (front-tire carrier), Andrew Turner (jackman), Daniel Rankin (rear-tire changer), Jason Fowler (rear-tire carrier), Michael Moore (gas man), Andy Rueger (catch can) and Jay Guarneri (windshield, 8th man). The team's pit crew coach is Joe Piette. The pit crew win, which pays $5,000, lifted the No. 39 team into a tie for fourth place in the Tissot standings with its Stewart-Haas Racing teammate - the No. 14 crew for Tony Stewart. Greg Biffle's crew leads the competition with five wins. The team with the most Tissot Pit Road Precision Award wins at the completion of the 36-race Sprint Cup schedule will receive a $100,000 bonus plus Tissot watches for the crew and driver.(Tissot)

Newman: Stock cars aren't made for Indy: Ryan Newman is not a fan of racing at Indy: "(Indianapolis Motor Speedway) is just flat and it's fast. Our race cars aren't made for that. Our race cars aren't designed for that. They designed this race car to put it on a racetrack, and it works here, it just doesn't put on a great race." (Indy Star)

Newman to run all four races at Bristol: Ryan Newman put his name in the record books at Bristol Motor Speedway in March of 2003 when he set the track record during qualifying. During August race week, the 31-year-old NASCAR Sprint Cup star again will be making his mark at BMS, while also etching his name in the NASCAR record books as he makes history by competing in NASCAR’s top three divisions, as well as the Whelen Modified Series, at the same track in the same week. Newman will start his marathon during the wildly popular August race week at the World’s Fastest Half-Mile with the UNOH Perfect Storm 150 Whelen Modified race and the O’Reilly 200 Camping World Truck Series event Wednesday, Aug. 19. On Friday, Aug. 21 he will compete in the Food City 250 Nationwide Series event and run the final leg, the Sharpie 500 Sprint Cup Series race, Saturday, Aug. 22. When totaled, Newman stands to make an astounding 1,100 laps, traveling more than 586 miles around the .533-mile oval over three nights and could be in the seat for more than seven hours. Newman’s success at BMS during the August race week, could also mean some big money for a lucky fan. Should Newman win all four races, one lucky fan will pocket the same amount he would win in purse money – approximately $400,000. Newman's No. 39 to feature special paint scheme honoring the USA Army's birthday: How sweet would it be for Ryan Newman to capture a win at his home track on the day his primary sponsor celebrates its 234th birthday. "Very sweet and very special," said Newman, whose recent hot streak has catapulted him to fourth place in the NASCAR Sprint Cup driver point standings. "We've been on a nice roll lately but victory has eluded us and that's our ultimate goal." It will be the U.S. Army's 234th birthday on Sunday. The military branch, which sponsors Newman's Chevrolet Impala SS, was born on June 14, 1775. The June 14th birthday also coincides with Flag Day. Newman's special weekend at MIS also includes involvement with the sponsorship of the Racing for Wildlife 200 ARCA race on Friday. Racing for Wildlife is a national initiative of the Ryan Newman Foundation and the Conservation Fund. One of the projects of Racing for Wildlife is partnering with MIS, Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Michigan United Conservation Club to renovate Cedar Lake Outdoor Center in the Waterloo Recreation Area in Chelsea, Mich, approximately 25 miles from MIS. As an environmental advocate, Newman will take part in a tree-planting ceremony Friday in the MIS campground, which is part of NASCAR's new Green Flag Tree Planting program.(US Army Racing/SHR)

Newman to host decorated Green Beret: Sgt. 1st Class Joseph Goodloe, a Green Beret and decorated war hero, will be a guest of Ryan Newman and the No. 39 U.S. Army/Stewart-Haas Racing team for Sunday's Memorial Day weekend classic -- Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe's Motor Speedway near Charlotte. The Special Operations Soldier, who is a 1989 graduate from South Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, served in seven separate tours of duty between Afghanistan and Iraq. He was awarded four Bronze Stars and one Bronze Star with Valor. Goodloe's seven tours of duty included four different deployments in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and three different deployments in Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He currently serves as an instructor at the U.S. Army Sniper School at Fort Bragg, N.C. When Newman visited Fort Bragg in January, Goodloe was his instructor at the Special Forces Sniper Weapons Range where Newman fired numerous rounds with the M107 50-caliber long-range sniper rifle.(U.S. Army Racing)

Newman describes Hendrick cars as unofficial teammates: Ryan Newman, who drives the No. 39 SHR Chevrolet, feels a kinship to the guys behind the wheel at Hendrick Motorsports. "I personally feel, I'm pretty sure Tony personally feels, that they're unofficial teammates," Newman said. "I mean, even to an extent you could consider them official teammates." Why? Because according to Newman, Hendrick Motorsports provides 66 percent of the Stewart-Haas Racing package. "The bulk of the package with our race car that we take to the racetrack is built at Hendrick Motorsports," Newman said. "I feel Jeff (Gordon), Jimmie (Johnson) and Mark (Martin) and Junior (Dale Earnhardt Jr.) are great drivers, I consider them teammates in the essence I don't want to put myself in jeopardy to put them in jeopardy." When Johnson was asked the same question -- do you think of Newman and Stewart as teammates? -- he had a different answer. "I haven't yet," he said. "I haven't. I don't know if that will change. I don't know if I want to think of them as teammates because some of the toughest decisions to make on track is when you're around a teammate." (Daytona Beach News-Journal)

Tony Gibson named Crew Chief of the Race at Richmond: Tony Gibson, crew chief for thee No. 39 U.S. Army Chevy driven by Ryan Newman, has been named the Wypall Wipers Crew Chief of the Race following Saturday's Crown Royal Presents the Russ Friedman 400 at Richmond International Raceway. The No. 39 team finished a respectable 4th place in Saturday's race after qualifying 10th. The team, led by Gibson, was strong early in the race, putting Newman in the lead four times (for a total of 45 laps) by lap 313. After being involved in a wreck on lap 314, Newman lost valuable track position, putting him back in 15th following the pit stop on lap 316. Determined to get back up front with the lead pack, Gibson continued to coach his driver as he worked his way through the field. With Gibson's guidance, Newman was back up to 4th with 44 laps remaining. In addition to the $1,000 check, the winning crew chief will receive signage to announce the win on their pit box the following week. The crew chief with the most weekly wins will be honored as the Wypall Wipers Crew Chief of the Year and will be presented a $20,000 check at the season finale in Homestead.(Wypall Wipers PR)

Newman still looking for sponsorship: Q: HOW'S THE SPONSORSHIP SEARCH COMING? Ryan Newman: "I'd say just like many people out there. The door is always open. People at Stewart-Haas Racing are working on other sponsors let's say for primary as well as associates. The U.S. Army is committed to their amount of races, I think it's 23. They've been great to work with. We have Haas Automation on the car as well but we're currently looking and working on other things as well."(Chevy/Stewar-Hass PR)

Engine failure slows Ryan Newman: No. 39-Ryan Newman ran solidly in the top-15 for most of Sunday’s Kobalt Tools 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton, Ga., but engine issues during the final 100 laps of the event slowed down his No. 39 Haas Automation Chevy and thwarted his team’s march to a top-10 result. Newman was relegated to a 22nd-place finish in his 15th career Sprint Cup start at AMS. “Our Haas Automation Chevy was pretty good today,” said Newman after the race. “We had some handling issues, but Tony Gibson (crew chief) and the guys adjusted on the car and gave me a really competitive machine. At the end, I think we maybe had a top-10 car, but we lost a cylinder and that put us behind. We were right in cycle to be the next guy for the ‘lucky dog’ and we just lost that cylinder and that set the tone for the rest of our day.” At lap 225, Newman radioed his crew that he had an engine problem, as his V-8 powerplant had missed several times as he drove down the backstretch, ultimately dropping a cylinder. Newman was able to nurse the engine and maintain a spot in the top-20 until the final caution flag of the day waved at lap 321. Under the caution, Newman reported that the motor had lost yet another cylinder. On the final restart, he couldn’t get his car up to speed quickly enough and lost four more spots, whereupon he finished 22nd, three laps down.(SHR/True Speed Communication PR)

Stewart and Newman blast Goodyear tires: Neither Tony Stewart nor Ryan Newman was happy with Goodyear after they crashed with each other in Saturday morning's final Daytona 500 practice. "Same thing everybody has been talking about all week, same stuff we talk about every year - the failures that Goodyear has," Stewart said after a right-rear tire on Newman's car blew, sending the No. 39 Chevrolet around right in front of Stewart. Both of their Stewart-Haas Racing cars were damaged badly enough that they were forced to backup cars. It's the second backup car Newman has needed this week. "I think that's part of their marketing campaign," Stewart said of NASCAR's tire supplier. "The more we talk about it the more press they get. I think they forget that it's supposed to be in a good way, not a bad way." (ThatsRacin.com)

Newman to back of the field for Daytona Duel: Ryan Newman's No. 39 U.S. Army Chevy suffered an engine malfunction in Wednesday's first practice session at Daytona International Speedway. The team was forced to change engines for the afternoon practice session, and under NASCAR rules, an engine change will require Newman to start Thursday's Gatorade Duel 150-mile qualifying race from the rear of the field. He was scheduled to start the second 150-miler from the outside pole. The engine change will not affect the Daytona 500 starting order. "Something broke in the engine," said Newman, the defending Daytona 500 champion. "I'm not really sure what. Obviously the horsepower has been great in qualifying and it felt strong out there. I was just coming up through the gears and getting up to speed and something let go. It's unfortunate. But these guys have another bullet they can bolt in and we'll be good to go."(Stewart Haas Racing PR)

Newman looking to become all-time pole sitter at Atlanta: Having won the pole at Atlanta Motor Speedway seven times previously, No. 39-Ryan Newman will attempt to make history on Friday, March 6 during Georgia Power Qualifying Night when he looks to become the all-time leader in pole wins at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Accustomed to leading the field to the green flag in Atlanta, Newman, known as the “Rocket Man” for his qualifying prowess, will not only be chasing history, but also his mentor with whom he is tied in pole wins, Buddy Baker. "Atlanta has always been a place where I like to qualify, and it would be an honor to get the all-time pole record there,” said Newman. It would be an honor to beat Buddy Baker in all-time poles at Atlanta Motor Speedway," Newman continued." (AMS PR)

Newman questions timing of NASCAR's drug-testing: Ryan Newman supports NASCAR’s new drug-testing policy for 2009 but says he was surprised that the sanctioning body so clearly defined a designated time frame for the tests. “I might be opening up a can of worms when I say this, but why would you announce you’re going to have a drug-testing time?” Newman said during the Stewart-Haas Racing portion of the Sprint Media Tour hosted by Lowe’s Motor Speedway. “I mean the whole idea of announcing it kind of takes away from the people that know how to cheat the system. “Obviously, I know there’s probably going to be some follow-ups with certain people ... but it just seems to me that you’re only eliminating the really, really naïve people in the first testing or in the first screening like this.” (SceneDaily.com)

Ryan Newman not likely to join JGR: Newman's name has been most prominently mentioned to land with Stewart-Haas Racing next season. Sources close to the situation said he also has had discussions with JGR, Richard Childress Racing and Gillett Evernham Motorsports. An RCR official said Friday that he expected Newman to go to Stewart, and JGR president J.D. Gibbs said Sunday it was unlikely the driver of Penske Racing's No. 12 would join his Toyota team. "It would be hard," Gibbs said before the Sprint Cup race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. "Another time, another day, maybe. He's a great individual. You would love to have him on your team. It's just all those ducks aren't in a row." (ESPN.com)

Three drivers on Stewart's wish list? Stewart said that Ryan Newman is just one of three drivers on his short list. Presumably, Martin Truex Jr. and Jamie McMurray are the other two. And Stewart is battling car owners Joe Gibbs and Richard Childress, who are both also looking for drivers. McMurray's future with car owner Jack Roush has been up for debate the past several weeks, and the speculation has become intense that Roush would be releasing McMurray. But apparently sponsor Crown Royal is pushing Roush to keep McMurray in the fold, and as tough as good sponsors are to find, that could well end that whole debate. McMurray has been mentioned as being on Childress' short list for his new fourth team. But Childress now appears to be back in the market trying to sign Truex. A Childress-Truex deal was in the works earlier this year, until Teresa Earnhardt, who owns DEI, said she would hold Truex to the option year on his current DEI contract for 2009.(Winston Salem Journal)

Penske Racing opts not to re-sign Newman: Penske Racing has decided it will not re-sign Ryan Newman, who has been with the team since 2000. "It's what is best for him and best for us," a Penske Racing spokesman said. "We're going to focus on getting him in the Chase and then move on." There has been considerable speculation that Newman will join fellow Hoosier Tony Stewart at the newly formed Stewart-Haas Racing team next season. Sources have told ESPN.com that a deal is close to being completed and could be announced in two weeks at Indianapolis. (ESPN.com)

Newman has options outside Penske Racing: Sources have told ESPN.com that deal to join the Indiana natives is close to done and could be announced in two weeks at Indianapolis. Newman said he has three serious options outside of Penske and that ownership is part of at least one of the options. He also said re-signing with Penske is an option. Asked if ownership could be an option at Stewart-Haas, where Stewart was given 50 percent of the company, Newman said, "I won't answer that." Newman said last month he would not re-sign with Penske unless the performance of his team improved significantly. He said the team has made some strides to improve, but not enough to convince him it is ready to challenge for a championship. (ESPN.com)

Newman inducted into Daytona 500 Champion's Walk of Fame: Ryan Newman's signature, right footprint and hand prints will now have their place in the history of Daytona International Speedway. During the Coke Zero 400 Weekend, Newman on Friday, July 4 at 1:30 p.m. will participate in a question and answer session with the race fans inside Daytona 500 Experience motorsports attraction and then proceed outside where he will have his 3x3 cement block with his signature, hand prints and right foot print placed into the Daytona 500 Champion's Walk of Fame. Alltel expects to return on #12 in 2009: Verizon's current bid to purchase Alltel will not affect the No. 12 in 2009. However, Alltel's driver Ryan Newman hasn't appeared happy at Penske Racing for some time — especially since the departure of his mentor and former president Don Miller. Like Truex, Newman has been mentioned as a good fit with RCR and JGR in the No. 20. (FoxSports.com)

Ryan Newman looking for team to improve: Ryan Newman has an agreement to revisit his latest contract offer with team owner Roger Penske after an undisclosed deadline, but said he will not return to his current NASCAR Sprint Cup team unless his No. 12 Dodge program shows significant improvement soon. “It’s a performance issue,” Newman, 30, said at a pre-Coke Zero 400 media event at Kennedy Space Center on Tuesday. “There’s no excuse. The other guys aren’t doing it. We shouldn’t either. We strive to be the best at everything, and we’re failing at that.” (St. Petersburgh Times)
