    • Hendrick comments on suit: Team owner Rick Hendrick on Saturday said he was "very disappointed" in Dianne Dorton, the widow of one of the men killed in a 2004 Hendrick Motorsports plane crash, for comments she's made referencing a wrongful death lawsuit she's filed against the company. Dorton and the wife of another man killed in the 2004 crash recently filed wrongful death lawsuits claiming the company was negligent in their husbands' deaths. Dorton, the widow of Hendrick engine builder Randy Dorton, said in an interview with the Observer that the lawsuit was "just an insurance issue" after the company didn't respond to her requests for help after her husband died. Her lawsuit alleges company president John Hendrick rejected the pilot's suggestion to divert to a different airport because of foggy weather in Martinsville, Va. Dorton and Hendrick were among 10 people killed in the October 2004 crash of the plane. "You can do a lawsuit for an insurance company, but you don't have to personally attack my family and you don't have to say the company hasn't helped when we've broken our back and been there and done things," an emotional Hendrick said Saturday. "Those are the two things that bother me. Lawsuits don't bother me. That's why we have insurance. To attack my family personally when we've done everything we can, I was very disappointed in Dianne." Hendrick disputes Dorton's claim he didn't respond to requests for help. "I paid Randy's bonus in 2004. I paid him six months in 2005. She's got a BMW, I paid her insurance. We had somebody there helping her night and day and available, I met with her anytime she wanted to," he said. Dorton was out of the country Saturday and unavailable for comment. Hendrick called accusations his brother, John, overruled a pilot to land at the Martinsville airport "totally false." (Miami Herald)

    • Peak Performance Daytona 500 Sponsor: Peak Performance Motorsports officials say the team has signed Mountain Dew AMP as sponsor for the upcoming events at Daytona International Speedway. Kevin Lepage will drive the #61 AMP Energy Drink car in the qualifying race for the Daytona 500 on Feb. 16. If he advances into the race, he will drive the Mountain Dew AMP car, marking the first time the company is a primary car sponsor for a Nextel Cup event. (NASCAR Scene Daily)

    • Daytona 500 Practice 1 Complete: 1st practice of the 2006 NEXTEL Cup season is complete, with the following top 5 drivers the fastest. Kevin Harvick, Jeff Gordon, Kyle Petty, Elliott Sadler, and Jimmie Johnson

    • Dodge looking for better nose:  Dodge teams are expected to test later this month or early next month at Kentucky Speedway to find a more effective nose configuration after bad weather canceled a planned test session. The nose of the Dodge Charger hurts the car's aerodynamics, and teams are searching for a solution NASCAR will approve. Ryan Newman said Penske Racing South has decided to run the 2004 Intrepid at California and Las Vegas - the next two races after the Daytona 500. Other Dodge teams plan to use the Charger. So, why can't these teams work together? "You have a bunch of guys there that think they know exactly what the cars need," Newman said of dueling Dodge teams. "That's a tough situation because you mix in opinions and knowledge or lack of knowledge and you end up spinning your wheels.'' John Fernandez, director of Dodge Motorsports operations, said Dodge has allowed its teams to try different solutions so that everyone is not doing the same thing. (Virginian Pilot)

    • BDR release on Daimler-Chrysler suit, plans to appeal:  Bill Davis Racing is disappointed with the decision of a federal court jury in Detroit that Bill Davis Racing breached its Motorsports Agreement with DaimlerChrysler's Dodge division to race vehicles in NASCAR's Cup Series. Bill Davis, President of Bill Davis Racing, stated, "We disagree with the jury verdict. We fully intend to exercise the opportunity extended by US District Court Judge George Steeh and ask the Court to set aside this verdict. If necessary, we intend to appeal the verdict to the US Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Our racing sponsors and business partners have remained supportive during the legal process and our full effort remains focused on bringing success to their NASCAR programs." Bill Davis Racing will not have any comment on this issue as the appeal process moves forward. (BDR)

    • DirecTV signs with RCR: NASCAR partner DIRECTV has announced an official partnership with Richard Childress Racing (RCR), one of NASCAR's premier racing teams. Through the partnership, DIRECTV will be an associate sponsor of the #07 Jack Daniel's Chevy and its driver, Clint Bowyer, during the 2006 Nextel Cup Series season. The association with RCR aligns DIRECTV with one of the sport's most well-respected racing programs and one of the sport's most exciting young drivers. DIRECTV also will be primary sponsor of the #07 Chevy at three Nextel Cup Series races this season at Martinsville (April 2), Pocono (June 11) and Talladega (October 8). As the nation's leading digital TV service, DIRECTV has a long history with NASCAR, though this announcement marks the company's first official sponsorship of a Nextel Cup team. The service has become an integral part of the sport by providing millions of fans the opportunity for the most enhanced, unique NASCAR viewing experience at home and trackside. DIRECTV has also become a critical piece of racing equipment for crew chiefs, as teams up and down pit road rely on the digital picture and sound to aid spotters and monitor car performance throughout the entire race. The partnership with RCR and Clint Bowyer will enable DIRECTV to create consumer marketing and retail promotions targeting NASCAR's loyal fan base. In addition, the relationship will provide DIRECTV the opportunity to increase awareness of its new DIRECTV Plus ® DVR among race fans and emphasize current and future features that will enhance their race viewing experience. • Will Farrell NASCAR movie gets a title: The city will be the namesake of an upcoming comedy feature film starring Will Ferrell as Ricky Bobby, a NASCAR racing sensation, Columbia Pictures announced Friday. "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" is currently in post-production, and will be released in theaters nationwide Aug. 4. Talladega Superspeedway officials expressed excitement about the film in a release Friday. "We have enjoyed being part of this project and are thrilled to have our facility figuring so prominently in the film," said Rick Humphrey, Talladega Superspeedway vice president. "A lot of buzz has been generated about this movie, and we are as excited as everyone else about the final product. We know it will bring a lot of exposure to our facility and hope it will encourage new fans to visit us for what is going to be one of the most exciting years to date at Talladega Superspeedway." With Ferrell playing the lead, the race track will most likely be background to the comedian's outrageous slapstick style. The film, written by Ferrell and director Adam McKay, details the experiences of Bobby and his childhood friend Cal Naughton Jr. (John C. Reilly), who create a racing phenomenon as they fearlessly finish most races in the Nos. 1 and 2 spots, with Naughton always coming in behind Bobby. (Daily Home)

    • PPI signs Yakety Yak Wireless as associate sponsor: PPI Motorsports that fields the No. 32 Tide/Downy Chevrolet driven by Travis Kvapil in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series is proud to announce its one-race associate sponsorship with Yakety Yak Wireless Inc. (YYWI). The partnership spans throughout the upcoming Daytona Speedweeks which culminates in the sport's season opener, The Daytona 500 on Feb. 19 at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway. Yakety Yak is excited to embark on this partnership which will help launch YYWI's national marketing campaign for 2006. Yakety Yak Wireless Superstores will have its Franchisees across the nation participate in a marketing campaign counting down to the Daytona 500 with special in-store promotions. "This will be one of the biggest events of the year and I want to make sure that the Yakety Yak presence at the Daytona race is as big as the race itself. We want to give fans a name to remember and something to talk about," said Jimmy Kindred, the co-founder and chief marketing officer of Yakety Yak Wireless. "PPI Motorsports is pleased to have the opportunity to bring Yakety Yak on board one of the most recognizable racecars in NASCAR," added Cal Wells III, owner of PPI Motorsports. "What better way to introduce the fastest growing chain of independently owned wireless stores to the fastest growing sport in America? NASCAR boasts the most brand-loyal fans and PPI Motorsports and our driver Travis Kvapil are excited to provide Yakety Yak with an exciting marketing vehicle to grow its business. It is my hope that this opportunity will develop into a long-standing partnership." Yakety Yak Wireless has grown dramatically in the seven years since its creation and has always recognized the importance of exciting sports sponsorship. Their presence at this year's Daytona 500 will create the type of exciting buzz that has fueled its brand growth since opening their first store in 1999. (PPI Motorsports PR)

    • Home Depot new NASCAR commercials: The Home Depot will debut a new NASCAR-themed television ad during the broadcast of the Daytona 500 featuring Stewart and members of the #20 Home Depot Racing Team. The spot accentuates The Home Depot's brand promise of "know-how" by linking Stewart's on-track success and, ultimately, his 2005 Nextel Cup championship, to his recent spate of home improvement projects. The 60-second spot, "Zippy's Link," features Stewart giving crew chief Greg Zipadelli a tour of his home highlighting the various home improvement projects he completed over the course of the season. Starting with a kitchen renovation, Stewart impresses Zipadelli with the installation of a new garbage disposal and hardwood floors, replacing a ceiling fan, repairing a toilet, painting the living room and finally, building a new outdoor brick patio in honor of winning the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard, his lifelong dream. During the ad, Stewart tours a skeptical Zipadelli through the house showing him each completed project and how it relates back to a specific race success during the 2005 season in order to convince his crew chief of the direct link between home improvement and racing. The ads underline that the secret to success is know-how, whether you are a do-it-yourselfer conducting a home improvement project or a racing superstar. (True Speed Communications)

His hands and mind were always busy as he designed tools to make life easier for the racing industry. In his pleasure time, he enjoyed flying remote controlled planes, going to car shows in his Chevy truck, and most recently fishing on Lake Norman with his family. Bill was a member of Wiggins Road Baptist Church in Mooresville, where he had served on the treasury committee, and assisted with grounds maintenance. (Charlotte Observer)

    • Georgia looking for more money for NASCAR Hall: Georgia lawmakers and Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin are trying to show NASCAR more money. State and city officials moved Thursday to put more dollars behind Atlanta's bid for a NASCAR hall of fame, including another $10 million in special tax breaks from the city of Atlanta, according to state Rep. (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)

    • Daimler-Chrysler wins suit against Bill Davis: DaimlerChrysler won a $6.5 million judgment Thursday against Bill Davis Racing in a breach of contract dispute in U.S. District Court in Detroit. A 7-member jury deliberated 4 hours after a 17-day trial before awarding the judgment to the Auburn Hills carmaker, which alleged that the North Carolina-based race team violated a six-year contract in 2003 by passing confidential Dodge Motorsports technology, parts and information to Toyota. The automaker said Bill Davis Racing helped Toyota develop a prototype Tundra racing truck for NASCAR's Craftsman Truck series at the same time Davis was under contract to prepare DaimlerChrysler stock cars for the Winston Cup Series, now the Nextel Cup Series. After terminating its contract and suing Davis in federal court, DaimlerChrysler said it learned that Davis had signed a contract in February 2003 to provide a car to General Motors for the Winston Cup Series. DaimlerChrysler said both competitors used the information to develop engines for the Craftsman, Nextel Cup and Busch racing series. Bill Davis Racing denied the charges, countersued and sought $8.5 million to $9.8 million from DaimlerChrysler for breach of contract. The jury gave DaimlerChrysler what it asked for, $6.5 million. U.S. District Judge George Steeh gave Bill Davis Racing three weeks to file post-trial legal briefs, which could include a request to set aside the verdict. The company's lawyer declined to comment on the verdict. (Detroit Free Press)

    • Junior Johnson car finally on displayed at N.C. Museum of history: The 1963 Chevrolet that Junior Johnson drove to seven victories and 10 poles in 33 NASCAR Winston Cup starts, was put on display Wednesday in the N.C. Museum of History, where the Sports Hall of Fame is located. Gov. Mike Easley accepted the loan of the white No. 3 car from Johnson and expressed the hope that "it will still be on display here in the museum's lobby 25 years from now." The governor added that Johnson deserved the honor "because he has brought the state fame well beyond our borders. Junior is a good citizen and a credit to North Carolina." It's been an uphill battle for Johnson, however. During the 1970s and '80s, an executive director of the N.C. Sports Hall of Fame refused to count votes toward Johnson's induction. The one-man ban was based on Johnson's conviction on a moonshine charge in 1956. Even after he received a full pardon from President Ronald Reagan in 1985, ballots for him were blocked from being counted. (Charlotte Observer)

    • Darnell wins Roush's Driver X: From countless laps around Martinsville to a head-to-head match race in Darlington, viewers of Discovery Channel's Roush Racing: Driver X saw the 2005 driver search unfold in their living rooms. When the dust settled, it was Erik Darnell who was named Driver X, and winner of a full-time ride in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Roush Racing: Driver X debuted October 24, the first of 13 episodes that began with 1,776 hopeful applicants being cut down to just 25 that would take to the track and compete to become the newest driver for Roush Racing's Craftsman Truck Series team. Based on Roush Racing's "Gong Show" driver search, Driver X allowed behind-the-scenes access to the driver selection process and on-track activity that served as one of the most intense, and not to mention expensive job interviews ever conducted. "It was an unbelievable opportunity to be chosen to compete in Driver X," said Darnell. "Just to be chosen out of that many people was like winning the deal in itself. To go on and win, I can't even explain how cool this is. I'm really looking forward to Daytona, and getting this season underway. I'm blessed to be afforded this opportunity, and I intend to make the most of it." Darnell will head to Daytona early next week with his #99 Roush Racing Ford F-150 and make his first start for the team on Friday, February 17 in the GM FlexFuel 250. The Roush Fords were among the fastest teams in pre-season testing at Daytona, showing at the top of the charts in each session. Darnell and his new teammate, fellow Driver X competitor David Ragan were joined by veteran driver Mark Martin for the three-day test. "Based on what we were able to accomplish in testing down there, I think we'll have a decent truck. I want to be able to learn a lot, and complete all the laps. Anything above that I'll consider a success," said Darnell. "We've got a great team and obviously a pretty good truck, so if I can hold up my end of it, maybe we'll be able to bring home a solid finish."(Roush Racing)

I am excited for the 2006 race season to begin and look forward to the racing activities at Daytona this week." Busch took responsibility for excessive speed, as well as citations for passing in a no passing zone and following another vehicle too closely. As part of the resolution, Busch will perform community service, which will be determined in the near future. (Penske Racing PR) Busch will serve 50 hrs. of community service

    • More on NASCAR publicist sex allegations: The case against former NASCAR spokesman Richard "Chip" Williams, arrested last week in an Internet child-predator sting, could involve more than 50 children, according to court documents. The possibility of multiple victims was raised by a 14-year-old girl Williams is charged with raping. The girl told police she had been having sex over the past three years with a man she knew as "John Wisham" -- the identity police say Williams used online. The girl told authorities John Wisham had chatted with her from all over the United States. An affidavit adds that the man claimed "to have been with over 50 children in various forms of sexual exploitation." Williams' attorney, Locke Clifford, said Williams' response can be summed up in one word. "Hogwash," the Greensboro lawyer said. The details surfaced in the affidavit, which was part of a search warrant a Guilford County sheriff's detective sought last week so police could search Williams' Mooresville home and business. • Suit filed in Hendrick plane crash: The wife of one of the people who died in the Hendrick plane crash has filed a new lawsuit that places partial blame for the crash on John Hendrick and Hendrick Motorsports. Those allegations come from Diane Dorton, who claims Hendrick's desire to get to the race on time may have contributed to the deaths of the ten people in that crash. In a claim she filed on behalf of husband Randy Dorton she claims there were a sequence of events leading up to the crash that could have been avoided. She also claims that they could have also chosen not to go at all. Randy Dorton called Diane on the morning of October 2, 2004. The conversation involved Randy's delay flying to the Subway 500 race in Martinsville. Randy built engines for NASCAR and for Hendrick race teams. Dianne said Randy told her he was supposed to fly by helicopter, but the helicopter was grounded due to bad weather. They'd fly in a Hendrick Motorsports plane instead. Randy waited in the Hendrick hangar for more than an hour. He called Dianne and told her he didn't think they'd go. He called 47 minutes later and said "we're going." It's not clear who gave the go order for the trip. It's an alleged conversation between pilot Richard Tracy and Hendrick Motorsports president John Hendrick that's part of a negligence and misconduct lawsuit against Hendrick Motorsports. The suit claims Tracy proposed flying to Danville instead of the Blue Ridge airport due to the weather and that Hendrick said that option was unacceptable because they'd be too far from the track and late for the race. Danville is farther away from the track than Blue Ridge. "He told us that and I feel certain that he would stay by what he said," said David Burgess, Dianne Dorton's attorney. Burgess said the grounded helicopter pilot was part of that conversation and could be called to testify. A separate lawsuit against Hendrick Motorsports alleges at least 27 other planes aborted landings at Blue Ridge due to weather. Diane said the lawsuit isn't about money. She said it's about finding the truth about what happened to Randy, what happened onboard the plane, addressing accountability and making future airplane travel safer for her friends in NASCAR. 6NEWS asked Hendrick Motorsports for their side of this story. They refused, saying they can't talk about a legal matter. (wncn.com)

    • Richmond NASCAR testing: Nearly all Busch Series and NEXTEL Cup Series drivers are expected to participate in important test sessions leading into the May 5-6 doubleheader weekend at Richmond International Raceway. Busch Series drivers will visit Richmond's 3/4-mile oval on March 28-30, while NEXTEL Cup Series drivers will test on April 11-13. Under NASCAR's new testing guidelines set for this season, Richmond is the only short track where NEXTEL Cup Series and Busch Series drivers are permitted to test. Overall, only six NEXEL Cup Series tracks and four Busch Series venues will host official test sessions. Teams are still permitted to test at tracks that are not part of their respective series schedules. The tests will be crucial for the teams, especially since Richmond International Raceway hosts two NASCAR weekends each season, including the 26th race of the NEXTEL Cup Series season, the Chevy Rock & Roll 400. After that race on Saturday, September 9, only the top 10 drivers and those within 400 points of the series leader will be eligible to win the NEXTEL Cup Series championship. Those drivers will battle it out against a full field each week over the last 10 races in the "Chase for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup." Details regarding the grandstand hours for fans will be announced shortly. (RIR PR)

    • Pilot error probable cause of Hendrick plane crash: Flight crew errors probably caused a Hendrick Motorsports plane crash in October 2004 that killed 10 people with ties to one of NASCAR's top syndicates, the National Transportation Safety Board said Tuesday. The crew improperly read instruments and missed a landing approach to Blue Ridge Airport, resulting in the Beech King Air 200 crashing into fog-shrouded Bull Mountain in the foothills of the Appalachians, the NTSB said in a synopsis of the report sent via e-mail to The Associated Press. 0"Contributing to the cause of the accident was the flight crew's failure to use all available navigational aids to confirm and monitor the airplane's position during the approach," NTSB staff wrote. The crash killed the son, brother and two nieces of Hendrick Motorsports owner Rick Hendrick. (WRAL.com)

    • B-1 to provide Daytona Flyovers: United States Air Force B-1 Lancer bombers will fly over the Daytona International Speedway for both the Hershey's Kissables 300 Busch race on Saturday Feb. 18, 2006 and the Daytona 500 NEXTEL Cup race on Sunday Feb. 19, 2006. The Air Force has 65 B-1B long-range bombers in its inventory. The Lancer is capable of flying intercontinental missions without refueling and has the capability to fly lower and faster with a substantially larger payload than any aircraft in the world. Because of this, the aircraft holds nearly 50 world records for speed, payload and distance. Its four engines put out a monstrous 120,000-plus pounds of thrust that permit the supersonic plane to reach speeds up to MACH 1.2. Its advanced electronic countermeasures are unmatched and designed to enhance survivability in combat. Operation of the B-1B started in 1985 and it still plays a major role in today's Air Force. • Georgia antes up $27 mil for NASCAR HoF: Georgia legislators and state officials are quickly putting together a $27 million Valentine's Day goody bag for the proposed Atlanta NASCAR hall of fame. House Speaker Glenn Richardson (R-Hiram) and other legislators introduced a bill this week exempting the hall of fame from taxes on construction materials, saving the proposed project about $6.4 million. Legislators and state officials also plan to earmark a $3 million state grant for the hall of fame in this year's budget and float the project an $18 million loan from a special economic-development bond kitty that the General Assembly set up last year. The incentive package is the state's part of a three-pronged effort to build a $92 million NASCAR hall of fame near Centennial Olympic Park downtown. (Salem-Journal)

"It's definitely not as easy as it looks," said Johnson. "Fortunately, I got to play myself so I think that made it a little easier for me. • Pocono not selling date: Don't place much stock in rumors about the world of stock car racing. That's the message from Dr. Joseph Mattioli, owner of Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Tunkhannock Township, PA, on Friday dismissed published reports that he is considering selling the NASCAR track or the rights to either or both of the two Nextel Cup races it hosts each year. A column published this week on the Internet in Yahoo Sports  noted that Bruton Smith, owner of Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Nevada, might try to buy Pocono Raceway from Mattioli. The reasoning runs that owning two racetracks would give Smith more options to schedule races and other events. Las Vegas Motor Speedway hosts just one Nextel Cup race per year. Mattioli said no one has approached him recently and in any case he's not interested in selling the raceway. "No, I've never heard of that and no one has discussed it with me," Mattioli said Friday. "Why would I do that?" he added, chuckling. "It makes no sense." Speculation that Smith or other rival track owners might try to buy Pocono Raceway has persisted for years. Published reports from 1999 describe almost the same scenario that was mentioned in the online column this week. Renewed speculation on the future of the raceway ran rampant among the Poconos' political and business communities after the Yahoo column appeared this week. (Pocono Record)
